Tomaz Building: Green Architecture in Porto Alegre
IDEIA1's 34-apartment project integrates nature with architecture.
1Project Highlights
The Tomaz Building is a 12,250 m² residential project located in a traditional neighborhood of Porto Alegre. Designed by IDEIA1, the structure is set for completion in 2026. The project stands out with its abundant greenery and nature-integrated design. All 34 apartments feature balconies directly connected to facade planters. This design aims to make nature an active element in residents' daily lives.
2Architectural Approach
The project was shaped by an understanding of architecture as legacy. Led by Cristina Martins, Gabriel Grandó and Camila Sanvitto, the team aimed to integrate nature into the design language. The facade planters serve not only aesthetic but also functional purposes. This approach enriches interior ambiance while offering a sustainable living space.
3Team and Collaborations
Alongside IDEIA1, the project involved Ambidestro (interiors), Cardim Arquitetura Paisagística (landscaping) and various engineering teams. Structural engineering was handled by Procalk, electrical engineering by Filippon Engenharia. Lighting design was done by Studio FOS. The project team included Lucas Gomes, Amanda Lauxen, Pedro Collares and Paula Fontana among others.
4Materials and Technology
The Tomaz Building utilized products from brands like GRAPHISOFT, OlgaColor, Schuco and Suvinil. These choices were made in alignment with the project's sustainability goals. Special solutions were developed for facade systems and planters. Material selections prioritized both durability and aesthetic concerns.
5Landscape Design
The landscaping by Cardim Arquitetura Paisagística is one of the building's distinctive features. The facade planters contribute not only visually but also to the building's microclimate. This design aims to increase urban biodiversity and offer residents a life integrated with nature.
6Interior Solutions
The interiors designed by Ambidestro strike a functional and aesthetic balance. Natural materials feature prominently in the apartments. The balcony planters create visual and physical connections with interior spaces. This design ensures residents maintain continuous interaction with nature in their daily lives.
7Sustainability
The Tomaz Building was designed with an approach that considers energy efficiency and ecological balance. The green facade system contributes to thermal insulation while reducing carbon footprint. Sustainable applications like rainwater harvesting systems and energy-efficient lighting solutions are key components of the project.
8Urban Impact
The project serves as an exemplary addition to Porto Alegre's urban fabric. It offers a contemporary language while harmonizing with traditional neighborhood character. Its green architecture approach could inspire other city projects. The Tomaz Building establishes a model for sustainable urban development.
