Maribyrnong House: A Family Home Dancing with Natural Light
Studio Ceravolo's renovated California bungalow celebrates the passage of time
1Project Framework
Studio Ceravolo transformed a 270 sqm California bungalow in Maribyrnong, Australia, into a modern family home. Completed in 2024, the project moved beyond traditional formal expectations to focus on contemporary needs. The architects preserved the building's original character while adopting a design approach centered around natural light optimization.
2Architectural Approach
The design team aimed to create spaces that celebrate changing light quality throughout the day. The project establishes a balanced dialogue between the bungalow's original details and contemporary additions. Large window openings and strategically placed light wells maximize natural illumination, giving spaces a dynamic character that evolves with daylight.
3Family-Centric Solutions
The renovation was carefully planned to support a young family's daily rituals. Common areas flow seamlessly while maintaining visual privacy. The open-plan kitchen and living area, with its changing atmosphere throughout the day, encourages family interaction. Private zones feature controlled light penetration for intimacy.
4Material Palette
Natural wood, white plaster, and minimalist metal details dominate the material selection. Each material was chosen for its light-reflecting and softening qualities. Textured surfaces create depth through ever-changing shadow patterns that shift with the sun's angle, adding dynamic visual interest to the spaces.
5Temporal Design
The architects treated the building's daily transformation as a design parameter. From morning's warm tones to noon's brightness and golden afternoon light, every moment leaves its mark. This approach allows inhabitants to physically experience the passage of time through spatial qualities that change with daylight.
6Sustainable Features
Passive climate control strategies enhance energy efficiency. Natural cross-ventilation cools the house in summer, while thermal mass stores winter sun heat. Thermally broken frames on large glazing maintain comfort while minimizing energy consumption. These features reduce the home's environmental footprint without compromising livability.
7Spatial Flow
Large sliding glass doors and terrace connections strengthen indoor-outdoor relationships. The backyard serves as an alternative living space at different times of day. Visual connections between spaces allow family members to sense each other's presence while maintaining privacy boundaries through careful spatial planning.
8Heritage Meets Innovation
The project respects the bungalow's historic character while accommodating contemporary family life. Original ceiling details and woodwork were preserved through careful restoration, while new modern elements create harmonious contrast. This balance gives the home both nostalgic charm and forward-looking functionality.
