US Treasury sanctions two Iran-linked crypto exchanges
OFAC targets exchanges allegedly used by Iranian regime for money laundering.
1Sanction decision
The US Treasury's OFAC imposed sanctions on two crypto exchanges, Shelbit and Aban Tether, allegedly used by the Iranian regime for money laundering. An Iranian national and related crypto wallets and companies were also added to the sanctions list. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent vowed to continue targeting illicit financial networks supporting the regime.
2Transaction details
According to OFAC, wallets controlled by Iran's Revolutionary Guard sent over $1 million in crypto to addresses linked to Shelbit. Wallets connected to sanctioned individual Siavash Kayvanpour sent $2 million in digital assets to Nobitex, an Iranian exchange added to the US sanctions list in June. Shelbit allegedly facilitated $2 million in crypto transfers to IRGC-controlled wallets.
3Total sanction amount
The US alleges the targeted exchanges and individuals facilitated $5 million in digital asset transfers for Iran-linked money laundering. The sanctions block these exchanges' access to the US financial system and freeze their assets. This move comes amid escalating military tensions between the two countries.
4Previous sanctions
Earlier this year, OFAC sanctioned digital asset exchanges Zedcex and Zedxio. In June, $131 million in Iran-linked wallets were frozen. According to TRM Labs, Iran-linked entities moved $3.8 billion through CoinEx.
5Military tension context
The sanctions come amid rising military tensions between the US and Iran. The Treasury Department claims the Iranian regime uses crypto markets to finance military activities. OFAC's statement emphasized these exchanges provided material support to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
6Sanction mechanism
OFAC's sanctions cut off targeted exchanges from US dollar access and isolate them from the global financial system. Sanctioned companies are prohibited from doing business with US customers. Secretary Bessent stated sanctions would continue whether in dollars, rials, or crypto.
7Crypto market impact
The sanctions caused no significant market fluctuations. TRX (+1.15%), LINK (+0.13%), ZEC (+0.10%), ADA (+2.87%), XRP (+0.17%), ETH (+0.82%), BTC (+0.82%), XMR (+1.05%), BNB (+2.18%), XLM (+0.21%), SOL (+0.18%), and HYPE (+3.52%) showed minor changes. Experts note limited market impact from the sanctions.
8Global implications
These sanctions reignited debates about crypto exchanges' role in international sanction regimes. The US pressure highlights the crypto industry's need for regulatory compliance. Experts warn similar sanctions could be applied to other countries, potentially reshaping global crypto markets.
