Deep Eaves Define This Hillside Residence in Osaka
APOLLO Architects' design offers privacy and harmony with nature through expansive overhangs.
1Architectural Dominance of Deep Eaves
The Moment project in Sakai City, Osaka features continuous eaves extending 6 feet from the wall line, wrapping all four sides of the structure. Supported by a two-story timber frame, this 2,300 sq ft residence was designed by Satoshi Kurosaki of APOLLO Architects Associates with structural engineering by Motoi Nomura. The prominent use of eaves dictates the rest of the building's architectural language.
2Layered Privacy Solutions
Situated above the sloping street level, the house employs perimeter walls and retaining structures to conceal interior spaces. This boundary-focused privacy approach reflects traditional Japanese design principles. The south-facing eaves also prevent direct sunlight and rain from hitting the glazed surfaces.
3Entryway as Curated Exhibition
Beyond the entrance gate, the architectural narrative shifts dramatically. The entry hall features lacquerware, woodwork, bonsai, and artworks arranged like a gallery display, transforming the sheltered exterior feel into openness. This transitional space embodies the minimalist, thoughtful approach of Japanese aesthetics.
4Structure Highlighted Through Lighting
Lighting design by Ken Okamoto of Ripple Design accentuates the walnut-clad soffits. Illuminated at night, these surfaces reveal the structure's depth while defining the home's nocturnal identity. The lighting dramatically showcases the building's form.
5Indoor-Outdoor Integration
A dry garden with vintage olive trees and other plantings surrounds the ground level. Outdoor furniture positioned beneath the eaves remains protected yet takes full advantage of the elevated views. This arrangement presents Japanese garden design principles through a contemporary lens.
6Fluid Transition Between Floors
Inside, the balance between enclosure and openness continues. The staircase running along windows serves as both sculptural element and level transition marker. Opening to a second-floor library, the landing transforms into a secondary living area with built-in seating.
7Adaptable Children's Rooms
Two children's bedrooms share a cantilevered balcony. Movable partitions allow the spaces to be combined or separated, creating dynamic living areas that evolve with the family's needs. This design offers flexibility as children grow.
8Context-Sensitive Modern Architecture
The oversized eaves at Moment do more than create a distinctive silhouette. Together with perimeter walls, they establish protective layers without isolating the residence from its surroundings. The result is a home that feels secure at its edges while remaining open to gardens, views, and changing light beyond.
