Kraken's Revenue Rises Despite Trading Volume Decline
Payward managed to increase revenue despite the crypto market downturn.
1Revenue Growth Amid Crypto Market Decline
Payward, Kraken's parent company, reported a 17% increase in adjusted Q2 revenue to $508 million. This growth occurred despite a 13% decline in total platform trading volume to $310 billion. While crypto spot trading volume fell 27.9% industry-wide in Q2, Payward increased its spot market share for the third consecutive quarter.
2Shift Toward Asset-Based Revenue
Payward's revenue mix shows a significant shift, with asset-based revenue tied to client balances now accounting for 60% of total revenue, up 5 percentage points year-over-year. This aligns with 42% annual growth in funded accounts reaching 6.6 million, and 48% growth in client balances measured at constant asset prices.
3Banking Product Expansion
Payward expanded its banking offerings by launching Flexline, a crypto-backed credit line for US clients in June, and extended its virtual IBAN product to 11 additional European markets. These moves supported growth momentum in the EEA region following Payward's MiCA authorization.
4Regulatory-Focused Acquisitions
Payward's acquisition of Bitnomial, completed May 1, provided access to CFTC-regulated US derivatives infrastructure (FCM, DCM, and DCO). Leveraging this, Kraken launched the first CFTC-regulated spot margin offering and perpetual futures for US retail traders, with futures DARTs rising 8% year-over-year.
5Payments Infrastructure Strengthened
The July 1 acquisition of Reap, a stablecoin-native payments platform, enhanced Payward's banking operations. The pending acquisition of Magic Labs' wallet infrastructure business will add embedded wallet capabilities to Payward Services, further expanding its financial infrastructure.
6Shared Infrastructure Model
While Kraken remains Payward's primary consumer brand, it shares core systems (matching engine, risk engine, settlement core) with NinjaTrader and xStocks. The Payward Services API now extends this infrastructure to external partners, creating cost efficiencies across the ecosystem.
7National Trust Charter Application
Payward's May application for an OCC national trust company charter remains pending. The outcome will determine whether Payward can operate under a federal trust structure alongside its existing state and offshore licenses, potentially enhancing regulatory credibility and market positioning.
8Market Positioning and Future Outlook
Despite crypto market challenges, Payward strengthens its position through asset-based revenue models and strategic infrastructure investments. Its regulatory-focused growth strategy and multi-license framework position the company for sustainable expansion in both US and European markets long-term.
