1Historic decision

The California State Senate declared September 4, 2026 as California Wildlife Day to honor Jackie, a famous bald eagle watched by millions. The resolution, introduced by Republican Senator Tony Strickland and supported by KFI AM 640 radio in Los Angeles, aims to celebrate the state's biodiversity while honoring Jackie's legacy. The decision highlights wildlife conservation's power to unite people.

2Jackie's story

Jackie was a bald eagle born in 2012 in Big Bear Valley, where she lived her entire life. During the 2016-2017 nesting season, she took over a nest monitored by Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV). With her first mate Mr. B, she had two eaglets named Stormy and Big Bear Baby in 2018. When Shadow entered her life in summer 2018, they successfully raised Cookie and Simba in 2019, and Spirit in 2022.

3Challenging survival

Jackie and Shadow's eggs failed to hatch in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, their three eggs produced only two surviving eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, after a severe snowstorm. In January 2026, ravens destroyed Jackie's two eggs, but she later hatched Luna and Sandy in April. Sandy was named after FOBBV's former executive director Sandy Steers, who died of cancer in February.

4Final battle

Found injured near Dana Point Park on July 17, Jackie was severely wounded after a fight with two juvenile eagles. Taken to Ojai Raptor Center, she was diagnosed with severe anemia. Her condition became critical on August 9, and she passed away on the morning of August 10. While the necropsy report is pending, millions were inspired by Jackie's resilience.

5Community impact

Jackie's story created bonds across generations and communities. KFI AM640's 'Wake Up Call' host Amy King noted how listeners watched Jackie, Shadow and their eaglets via webcams. King emphasized how this story united people and created a shared sense of community. FOBBV will hold a memorial service for Jackie on October 3.

6Political support

Senator Strickland stated Jackie captured hearts in California and worldwide, showcasing wildlife's beauty and resilience. He noted the timing was especially meaningful as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, reflecting on unifying values. The resolution also acknowledges the bald eagle's significance in American symbolism.

7Technology's role

Friends of Big Bear Valley's nest cameras allowed global audiences to witness Jackie and Shadow's life. This technology provided direct observation of nature's beauty and brutality. Jackie's popularity boosted interest in wildlife conservation efforts and raised awareness about biodiversity.

8Enduring legacy

California Wildlife Day aims to immortalize Jackie's resilience and the importance of wildlife conservation. Her story demonstrated how protecting nature strengthens community bonds. This decision will inspire future generations and contribute to preserving California's biodiversity.
