Estudio VA Architects Design Blue Box Entrance for Argentine Campground
Modular grid structure contrasts with organic campground growth in San Carlos
1Project scope and location
Estudio VA arquitectos designed a 199m² entrance structure for a recreational campground in San Carlos, Argentina. The project serves as a new gateway to the sports facility, addressing the need for organized access to a site that had developed organically over time. Completed in 2024, the design contrasts with the campground's existing informal morphology through its deliberate geometric approach.
2Design approach
The architects employed a strict 3.30 x 3.30-meter grid system to bring order to the campground entrance. This modular framework creates visual contrast with the surrounding environment while providing functional organization. The design team consisted of lead architects Abadie Federico and Vicente Prieto Pablo, who worked to establish appropriate scale for the recreational facility's entry point.
3Material selection
The project specification includes products from manufacturers C+C, FV, Roca, and jhonson acero, though exact material applications aren't detailed. Landscape architect Carol Gallo contributed to integrating the structure with its surroundings. The material palette appears deliberately restrained to maintain focus on the geometric form and its relationship to the site.
4Contextual response
The Blue Box design directly responds to the campground's history of unplanned growth. By introducing rigid geometry where previous development lacked formal organization, the architects created a clear threshold between the outside world and recreational space. This approach gives visitors an immediate sense of transition upon entering the facility.
5Photographic documentation
Luis Barandiaran's photographs capture the completed structure's relationship to its environment. The images highlight how the architectural intervention stands apart from the campground's organic development while serving its functional purpose. The visual documentation emphasizes the contrast between designed order and natural growth patterns.
6Project scale
At 199 square meters, the entrance structure achieves significant presence without overwhelming the recreational facility. The architects balanced the need for visual impact with appropriate proportions for the campground context. This intermediate scale allows the design to serve as both functional infrastructure and architectural statement.
7Design team composition
Estudio VA arquitectos led the project with Federico Abadie and Pablo Vicente Prieto as principal architects. The inclusion of a landscape architect indicates consideration of how the structure meets the ground and transitions to the broader site. This multidisciplinary approach suggests attention to both architectural form and environmental integration.
8Architectural significance
The Blue Box demonstrates how simple geometric interventions can bring order to informally developed sites. Its success lies in achieving clear functional improvement while making an architectural statement about organization versus organic growth. The project shows how modest-scale interventions can significantly impact user experience in recreational environments.
