Kubernetes v1.37: Cleaning Up Legacy Features
Kubernetes removes outdated features to enhance production readiness.
1Key Features of Kubernetes v1.37
Kubernetes v1.37, codenamed Garhwal, includes 67 changes: 16 stable features, 23 beta features, 27 new alpha features, and 1 deprecated feature. This update aims to make Kubernetes more production-ready. According to CNCF's January 2024 survey, 82% of Kubernetes users run it in production.
2Metrics API Reaches Stability
The Metrics API, after nine years in beta, has finally reached stable status. This API provides CPU and memory usage for pods and nodes. Kubernetes' 2020 rule mandates that beta features must become stable within three minor releases. Although the Metrics API bypassed this rule, it is now officially stable.
3Retirement of kube-dns
Kubernetes' original DNS server, kube-dns, is being retired in favor of CoreDNS, which has been the default DNS add-on since Kubernetes v1.13. Users of kube-dns must update their clusters before Kubernetes 1.40, or they will cease to function. This change is part of Kubernetes' effort to modernize DNS management.
4End of Support for IPVS
Starting with Kubernetes 1.43, kube-proxy will no longer support Linux IPVS (IP Virtual Servers). IPVS was introduced to solve bottlenecks caused by iptables-based routing but failed to deliver expected performance. Instead, nftables has been designated as the future routing solution. This change reflects Kubernetes' optimization of routing mechanisms.
5Removal of cgroup v1
Kubernetes is phasing out the first version of Linux control groups, cgroup v1. cgroup v2 offers more granular oversight of container resources. Since Kubernetes v1.35, nodes relying on cgroup v1 are not initialized, although a temporary workaround is supported for a limited time. This change highlights Kubernetes' goal of efficient resource management.
6Pod-Level Checkpoint and Restore
Kubernetes v1.37 introduces pod-level checkpoint and restore as an alpha feature. This allows the runtime state of containers to be saved and later restored, which can simplify container restarts in production environments. The feature is managed by container runtimes.
7Autoscaling with HPAScaleToZero
HPAScaleToZero adds the ability for Kubernetes' Horizontal Pod Autoscaler to scale workloads down to zero pods. This beta feature is now enabled by default. Workloads can be scaled down to zero pods when idle and restarted on demand. This can help optimize resource usage.
8KYAML Simplifies YAML Management
Kubernetes v1.37 introduces KYAML, a new subset of YAML aimed at making Kubernetes' YAML-based configurations more understandable and manageable. KYAML could be a significant convenience for developers dealing with complex configurations. This innovation is part of Kubernetes' efforts to improve user experience.
