Inside Db's Ramverk Alu: Engineering Meets Minimalism

369 custom components hidden behind Scandinavian design philosophy

1The Unseen Engineering

Db's Ramverk Alu suitcase appears as a minimalist aluminum shell from the outside. When opened, it reveals a complex internal structure with 369 custom-made parts. From Japanese Hinomoto wheels to the central steel frame, every component is pulled inward to eliminate exterior hardware clutter. Co-founder Truls Brataas explains this approach was developed to overcome limitations of standard luggage components.

2Modular Repair System

Ramverk Alu replaces traditional riveted connections with mechanical fasteners removable by Phillips screwdriver and hex key. This system allows replacement of only damaged components when specific areas are impacted. Brataas emphasizes that considering disassembly from the design phase extends product lifespan. Repair mechanisms remain visible every time the suitcase is opened, even if unused for years.

3Structural Frame Innovation

The 6061-T5 aluminum CenterFrame running through the suitcase's middle enhances torsional rigidity and impact absorption. The 5052-H32 alloy EdgeFrame handles perimeter loads. This structural system, first developed in Db's earlier Ramverk Pro model, becomes more pronounced in the aluminum version. Every hinge and connection point is meticulously positioned to remain invisible when closed.

4Prototyping Process

The design team constantly switched between physical prototypes and digital models for this suitcase comprising hundreds of parts. Brataas notes even minor proportional errors could create chain reactions throughout the system. For instance, a hinge's position directly affects surrounding frame design. Material testing often drew inspiration from outside the luggage industry.

5Scandinavian Design Philosophy

Brataas defines Scandinavian design as 'function before form,' rooted in the region's relationship with nature and culture of working with scarce resources. In Ramverk Alu, this translates to every element justifying its existence. The cleanest surfaces belong to the exterior shell that reveals least about the suitcase's workings.

6Pushing Industrial Design Boundaries

Db's team challenged many conventions in aluminum luggage category. By rejecting predetermined dimensions and engineering logic of standard hardware, they designed their own components. This approach didn't just hide rivets but ensured visual coherence of the entire connection system. Brataas believes these custom parts actually deliver superior design.

7Material Selection Matters

Ramverk Alu employs different aluminum alloys for each section's specific function. The 6061-T5 alloy in center frame ensures load distribution while 5052-H32 on edges withstands perimeter forces. These differences disappear into the same silver body when closed. Material experiments frequently borrowed from non-luggage industries.

8Sustainable Design Approach

This suitcase sets an important example for sustainability in luxury travel gear. Modular design and easy repairability extend product lifespan while hiding unnecessary hardware preserves aesthetic integrity. As Brataas puts it, 'simplicity is the final stage of a complex design process' in this groundbreaking product.
