Mercedes-AMG Unveils 1,150hp Electric SUV Built on AMG.EA Architecture
The new performance SUV features axial flux motors and ultra-fast 710kW charging capabilities.
1Ground-up Performance Engineering
The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV represents the first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house during the brand's 59-year history. Built on the high-performance AMG.EA architecture, the vehicle aims to bridge the gap between track-focused sports car handling and suburban utility. It is scheduled to arrive in the US market by next summer.
2Triple Motor Power Output
Available in GT 53, GT 55, and flagship GT 63 trims, the SUV utilizes three axial flux motors. The top-tier model delivers 1,153 horsepower, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric. This powertrain configuration mirrors the technology previously introduced in the brand's four-door GT coupe model.
3Advanced Charging Infrastructure
The vehicle features an 800-volt architecture supporting charging speeds up to 710kW for the 128kWh battery variants. Drivers can achieve a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 12 minutes. This system significantly outperforms the 320kW charging speeds currently offered by competitors like Porsche, enhancing long-distance travel efficiency for owners.
4F1-Inspired Battery Technology
The battery pack utilizes specialized NCMA cathodes and silicon-containing anodes within cylindrical cells. To maintain thermal stability, nonconductive oil circulates directly around each individual cell. This F1-derived cooling method enables continuous high-power delivery and extends overall battery longevity, marking a significant evolution in Mercedes' proprietary electric vehicle energy management systems.
5Active Suspension and Handling
Mercedes-AMG replaced traditional mechanical roll bars with an active hydraulic suspension system designed to eliminate pitch and roll. Combined with three-stage air springs and six-degree active rear-axle steering, the setup balances track precision with comfort. Despite its size, the GT 63 weighs 5,941lbs, remaining competitive with the Lucid Gravity and Porsche Cayenne.
6Simulated Emotional Driving Experience
To preserve the brand's identity, the SUV pipes recorded sounds of legendary AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines into the cabin. The system integrates physical seat vibrations and simulates mechanical gear shifts via paddle controls. This approach aims to provide an emotional connection, countering the silence typically associated with electric vehicle performance.
7AI-Driven Performance Management
The Predictive Performance Manager uses track-mapping data to dynamically adjust motor output based on topography. By conserving energy on technical sections, the system ensures full power availability for steep inclines and straights. This AI integration prevents battery overheating and power throttling, allowing for more consistent lap times during high-performance track driving sessions.
8Digital Cabin Integration
The interior features the MB.OS platform displayed on a 14-inch screen, incorporating AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google. These agents manage navigation, web searches, and infotainment tasks. Simultaneously, Mercedes' onboard AI handles physical vehicle adjustments, including HVAC settings and drive modes, all accessible through voice commands for a seamless user experience.
