The show blends the classic detective duo format with sci-fi elements. As members of the Green Lantern Corps, the pair can create green energy constructs with power rings. However, Lanterns takes a minimalist approach to these abilities, offering a mystery set in a more grounded world. ## Mentor-Trainee Dynamic The series explores the challenges in the mentor-trainee relationship between Hal and John. Veteran Lantern Hal often belittles John, while the former Marine tries to remain stoic. The show also highlights the extra hurdles John faces as a Black man. As his father points out, John must work twice as hard to succeed as a Lantern. ## Themes of Race Lanterns addresses racial themes, though less intensely than Watchmen. It delves into the pressures John faces as a Green Lantern and his family's expectations. These themes shine in the show's most compelling moments. The small-town Nebraska setting also touches on current issues like xenophobia. ## Character Chemistry Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre share impeccable on-screen chemistry. Chandler's Hal is both irritating and charming, while Pierre's John exudes controlled restraint. Their tension creates some of the show's most entertaining and dramatic scenes. Pierre proves his star power once again after Rebel Ridge. ## Sci-Fi Meets Realism Lanterns presents Green Lantern's classic sci-fi elements in a more realistic tone. Aliens often appear in human disguise, and energy constructs are used sparingly. This approach allows for less flashy but more impactful moments, like the minimalist use of green energy shields. ## A Small-Town Mystery The main story unfolds in Rushville, Nebraska, where Hal and John investigate a murder with possible alien ties. Garrett Dillahunt's William Macon stands out as a xenophobic local with a private militia, adding tension to the town's dynamics. The mystery deepens as the duo uncovers secrets. ## Performances and Direction Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the show offers a character-driven narrative. Chandler and Pierre's performances, combined with the directors' vision, create unforgettable scenes. The depth of the characters and their dynamics are the series' strongest assets, especially Hal's verbal jabs at John. ## A DC Universe Gem Lanterns is an exciting addition to the DC Universe. With its character chemistry, intriguing mystery, and timely themes, the show stands out. Premiering August 16 on HBO Max, it promises a unique blend of sci-fi and detective genres. A must-watch for DC fans and newcomers alike. ## Sources covering this story - https://mashable.com/entertainment/lanterns-review-hbo — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
