1Project Scope and Scale

The Konya Square Houses and Bicycle Museum extension covers a total area of 7500 square meters. Led by Ömer Selçuk Baz, the project involves a significant expansion of existing facilities. Completion is scheduled for 2026, marking a major milestone for the architectural firm Yalin Architectural Design in the city of Konya.

2Historical Contextual Design

The original complex consists of 13 reinforced-concrete buildings constructed in 2005. These structures were designed to reflect the traditional Konya houses and neighborhood fabric that existed on the site until 1955. The current expansion project aims to maintain this historical continuity while integrating new museum functions into the existing urban layout.

3Multidisciplinary Design Team

The design process involved a large team including lead architects Ömer Selçuk Baz, Ramazan Avcı, and Seden Cinasal Avcı. Extensive collaboration was required across various disciplines, including urban planning by Arzu Nuhoglu and landscape design. The project also utilized specialized engineering consulting for mechanical, structural, electrical, and infrastructure systems to ensure structural integrity.

4Material and Structural Choices

The construction utilizes a combination of wood, glass, and steel to achieve its architectural vision. These materials are selected to balance the aesthetic requirements of the museum extension with the durability needed for public spaces. The project documentation highlights these specific materials as key components in the overall refurbishment and expansion strategy.

5Evolution of Site Usage

Since their construction in 2005, the 13 buildings have served diverse functions. The complex has accommodated various non-governmental organizations and municipal departments over the last two decades. This transition into a museum extension represents a shift in the site's utility, moving from administrative use toward a more cultural and public-facing role.

6Engineering and Technical Integration

Technical execution was supported by multiple specialized firms including Karacan Engineering for mechanical systems and Özcihan Engineering for structural components. Promete Muhendislik managed electrical systems, while Birim Altyapi provided infrastructure expertise. This multi-firm approach ensures that the museum extension meets modern safety and operational standards required for large-scale cultural facilities in Türkiye.

7Urban Planning and Landscape

Arzu Nuhoglu directed the urban planning efforts, ensuring the new extension respects the existing neighborhood fabric. The landscape design is integrated to complement the traditional house styles preserved in the 2005 construction. This careful planning approach maintains the site's historical identity while providing necessary modern amenities for the new museum visitors.

8Strategic Cultural Impact

The project serves as a model for adaptive reuse and urban revitalization in Konya. By expanding the existing square houses into a museum, the city preserves its architectural heritage while fostering cultural growth. The 2026 completion date signals a long-term commitment to maintaining the historical narrative within a contemporary urban development framework.
