MVRDV's Beijing fashion flagship blends traditional roof tiles with modern design
Urban Revivo's new store merges local architectural heritage with contemporary aesthetics.
1Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
MVRDV drew inspiration from Beijing's traditional roof tiles for Urban Revivo's flagship store. The facade features suspended aluminum tiles and tubes, creating a dramatic design that reflects the brand's youthful energy while honoring the city's architectural heritage. This innovative approach bridges past and present in a single visual statement.
2Modern Interpretation of Moon Gates
Seven circular openings on the facade reinterpret traditional Chinese moon gates, serving as main entrances and display windows. A wave-like three-dimensional pattern adds dynamism to the exterior. The brand's signature blue color shifts to purple from different angles thanks to a special dichroic coating, creating visual intrigue.
3Layered Spatial Experience
The interior features gray bricks referencing Beijing's Hutong neighborhoods. Each of the four floors offers distinct atmospheres: traditional moon gates on ground level gradually transition to modern geometric forms upstairs. This layered design provides visitors with an evolving experience as they move through the space.
4Signature Collection Rooms
Six themed rooms showcase special collections through unique design approaches. The 'Soft Room' features wall cushions, while the 'Playful Room' incorporates recycled fabric blocks. 'Avant Garde Room' displays products in glass cases. These immersive environments transform shopping into a multisensory brand experience.
5Architectural Playground
Sanlitun shopping district has become a laboratory for bold retail architecture. MVRDV previously designed Tiffany & Co.'s glass-veiled flagship nearby. Urban Revivo's store contributes to this innovative landscape, pushing boundaries with its tile-inspired facade while respecting Beijing's urban context.
6Global Vision Meets Local Context
MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs explains: 'The design combines two seemingly opposing approaches into one immersive retail environment.' The project successfully balances Urban Revivo's international aspirations with authentic connections to Beijing's architectural identity, creating a space that feels both cosmopolitan and locally rooted.
