1Record Valuation

Etched has raised $700 million in a funding round led by Jane Street, reaching a $21 billion valuation. This more than doubles its $10.3 billion valuation from July 23. The company also completed its first customer delivery - a hardware rack shipped to Jane Street.

2Rapid Growth

Etched's valuation has nearly quadrupled in eight months. After reaching $5 billion in December 2023, it hit $10.3 billion in July 2024 through a $300 million Series C led by Sequoia. Now, just 26 days later, that figure has doubled again to $21 billion.

3Strategic Investors

Jane Street isn't a new investor in Etched. June reports revealed the trading firm was already among Etched's backers alongside Hudson River Trading, Jump Trading and Two Sigma. In this round, it increased its position to become the lead investor.

4Industry Significance

Four major trading firms investing in an AI inference hardware company is notable. In this sector, latency directly translates to monetary losses, making hardware performance absolutely critical for competitive advantage.

5Technological Innovation

Etched's design splits the problem in two: A low-voltage 'prefill' chip packs more transistors without overheating, while the 'decode' portion uses what the company calls 'cluster-scale memory' - enabling chips to share one fast memory pool.

6Product Evolution

The company initially focused on etching a single model into silicon. Now its systems support Mixture of Experts designs like DeepSeek and Qwen, as well as non-transformer architectures such as Mamba.

7Commercial Position

Etched had signed over $1 billion in contracts as of June. It successfully ran its first chip on TSMC's N4P process on the first attempt - an engineering achievement considered rare in the semiconductor industry.

8Market Competition

The funding will be used for factories, supply chains and fleet software to reach gigawatt scale. With European rival Olix tripling its valuation to $3.3 billion, intense competition is heating up in this emerging market.
