Honda's New Electric Lawn Mowers: HRX-BE vs HRX-BV Compared

We examined the differences and price-performance ratio of Honda's premium electric lawn mowers.

1Honda's electric transition

Honda announced in late 2022 that it would discontinue production of gas-powered lawn mowers and launched electric versions of the HRX series in 2023. The HRX-BV and HRX-BE models retain the 4-in-1 Versamow system and Roto-Stop safety features from their gasoline predecessors. Both models come with a 5-year warranty, but there are significant differences in terms of price-performance ratio.

2Entry-level HRX-BV features

The HRX-BV model operates on a single 8 Ah battery, offering approximately 30 minutes of cutting time under ideal conditions. Suitable for ¼ acre yards, its most notable feature is the speed adjustment dial near the handles. This dial allows precise control of the self-propelled mower's speed. It's priced at $1,049 on Amazon.

3Advantages of the premium HRX-BE

The HRX-BE model offers up to 45 minutes of cutting time and 0.37 acre capacity with its 12 Ah battery. The battery compartment on top of the unit has a slot for an additional battery. Instead of a dial, it features levers on both handles for incremental speed control. The base version retails for $1,299.

4Additional battery cost

An extra 12 Ah battery for the HRX-BE adds approximately $600 to the total cost, bringing the price close to $1,900 - a range where some entry-level riding mowers are available. According to Consumer Reports, all of the best affordable lawn mowers are priced under $450.

5NeXite polymer deck design

Both models feature Honda's proprietary NeXite polymer material instead of traditional steel or aluminum. This material shares characteristics with automobile bumpers and is resistant to impact and rust. However, experts have expressed concerns about the long-term durability of plastic decks.

6Ergonomic shortcomings

User reviews indicate the battery compartment door lacks a stay-open mechanism. This forces users to hold the door open with one hand while inserting the heavy 9-pound (approximately 4 kg) battery with the other. The absence of carrying handles on the batteries has also drawn criticism.

7Market positioning

While Honda's electric models stand out for cutting quality, their prices are well above industry averages. These machines, designed primarily for professional users, occupy the luxury segment. According to Consumer Reports, all of the best affordable lawn mowers are priced under $450.

8Who are they for?

Honda's HRX series electric mowers are designed for consumers with large yards who prioritize cutting quality. However, considering the price-performance ratio, they might be overkill for small lawns. They offer a premium eco-friendly electric solution but may not suit budget-conscious consumers.
