HARMAY Changsha Guojin Street Store Design by STUDIO SPLASH
A strategic retail interior project connecting underground transit hubs in Changsha's commercial center.
1Strategic Urban Retail Placement
The HARMAY project is situated on Guojin Street within the Wuyi Square commercial district of Changsha. This location serves as a critical retail spine, effectively linking street-level entrances with subterranean transit hubs. The store occupies the B1 level, strategically positioned to capture high pedestrian traffic at a major intersection of circulation.
2Architectural Design and Scale
Designed by STUDIO SPLASH, the retail space encompasses a total area of 471 square meters. The architectural layout bridges the B2 double-height atrium with north-south ground access routes. This design choice creates a seamless transition for shoppers moving through the complex underground network of corridors that define the Guojin Street commercial area.
3Collaborative Project Execution
The construction and design process involved multiple specialized partners, including Shanghai Xuhui Planning and Architectural Design Co., Ltd. as the LDI. Shanghai Yuying Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. served as the general contractor for the site. The project reached completion in 2025, reflecting a coordinated effort to integrate retail functionality into urban infrastructure.
4Material and Display Integration
The interior aesthetic relies on specific material selections and display props to define the retail environment. NKSTONE and Shanghai Mufang Display Props Co., Ltd. provided the essential components for the store's interior fit-out. These elements are curated to enhance the brand experience while maintaining the structural integrity of the underground retail space.
5Navigating Subterranean Circulation
The store's layout is heavily influenced by the crisscrossing interior corridors of the Guojin Street development. By occupying the B1 level, the design team successfully manages the flow of pedestrians between transit hubs and commercial zones. This spatial strategy ensures that the store remains a focal point within the dense underground retail environment.
6Design Team and Leadership
Lead architect Simon Huang directed the design team, which included Ho Yan Ko, Luqian Lin, and Kaki Kong. Their collective approach focused on maximizing the utility of the 471-square-meter footprint. The team prioritized spatial connectivity, ensuring the store functions as a bridge between different levels of the Wuyi Square commercial district's infrastructure.
7Visual Documentation and Records
The architectural project was documented through photography by Aaron Shao, capturing the interplay between the retail space and the surrounding transit corridors. These images highlight the spatial relationship between the B1 level store and the B2 atrium. The documentation provides a clear record of the project's integration into the existing urban fabric.
8Impact on Retail Infrastructure
This development exemplifies the trend of integrating high-end retail into complex subterranean transit hubs. By leveraging the high-traffic nature of Wuyi Square, the store creates a unique commercial anchor point. The project demonstrates how architectural design can successfully navigate the constraints of underground urban planning to deliver a cohesive consumer experience.
