ChatGPT Launches Virtual Try-On Feature for Festive Shopping
OpenAI integrates generative AI to visualize clothing on users for improved online shopping experiences.
1Evolution of Virtual Fitting
Retailers have struggled for over 15 years to replicate the physical fitting room experience online. Early attempts included robotic mannequins from Fits.me and 3D body modeling by Metail. These solutions faced high costs and scalability issues, eventually leading to failures like the closure of Fits.me after its acquisition by Rakuten in 2015.
2Generative AI Shift
Unlike previous methods that built complex 3D body models, modern systems use generative AI to place clothing directly onto a user's photograph. Google pioneered this with a diffusion-based model in 2023. OpenAI has now integrated this technology into ChatGPT using the Images 2.5 model, allowing users to visualize items on themselves.
3Functionality and Integration
The feature allows users to upload screenshots of items found elsewhere or use products directly from shopping results. A dedicated button triggers the try-on process. Users must provide a selfie and a full-body photo, which are stored as reference images to facilitate future sessions without requiring repeated uploads for every single search.
4Managing User Expectations
OpenAI explicitly positions this tool as a visual reference rather than a guarantee of fit or size. Product manager Aarush Selvan emphasizes that generated images may not perfectly reproduce the person or garment. Shoppers are advised to verify merchant measurements and return policies before finalizing any purchase on the external retailer's website.
5Handling Complex Ensembles
While the tool excels at individual items, it does not currently support multi-product try-ons. Users can manually upload multiple images to see if ChatGPT can generate a combined look, but this is not a native feature. The system focuses on individual garment visualization to assist with discovery rather than complete outfit styling.
6Data and Privacy Controls
Reference photos are retained for future sessions but can be deleted or replaced via the Settings menu. Generated try-on images are saved to the user's Library and remain private unless shared. The system refreshes product information for saved items, ensuring that pricing and stock details remain as accurate as possible for the user.
7Commercial Neutrality
OpenAI maintains that product results are independent of advertising. Advertisers cannot influence, rank, or alter the answers provided by ChatGPT. If a specific product is unavailable, the model may suggest alternative styles, fabrics, or colors. This approach aims to keep the shopping conversation focused on user discovery rather than paid promotional content.
8Future of Festive Shopping
As the wedding season approaches, this technology changes the discovery phase of shopping by moving the trial room to the phone. While it simplifies visualizing styles from social media screenshots, it remains a tool for inspiration. Ultimately, the final decision still rests on subjective factors that technology cannot yet fully resolve.
