1MIT's New Security Initiative

MIT is installing over 500 AI-powered security cameras across campus. These cameras will be used in academic buildings, residence halls, and open areas. The project began in November 2025 and will continue until September 2026.

2Technological Features

The installed cameras can collect real-time face and object classification data. They can detect motion, crowds, face masks, and camera tampering. They can also classify clothing color, gender, and age up to 35 feet from the camera.

3Data Retention Policy

According to MIT spokesperson Kimberly Allen, collected data will be retained for 30 days. However, this period can be extended in special cases. This policy aims to protect the privacy of students and staff.

4Hanwha's Wisenet AI Series

Most of the installed cameras belong to Hanwha's Wisenet AI series. These cameras can identify and classify multiple objects using deep learning algorithms. They support resolutions ranging from 2MP to 4K.

5Real-Time Monitoring

The camera systems will be continuously monitored using Ai-RGUS AI software. This software will control the pan, tilt, rotate, and zoom movements of the cameras, ensuring comprehensive security across campus.

6Balancing Security and Privacy

MIT's initiative enhances campus security but also raises privacy concerns. Students and staff are curious about how these systems will be used and how their data will be protected.
