1Open Source Move After Privacy Scandal

SpaceX decided to open source the Grok Build CLI tool after it was found to be uploading users' entire code repositories without permission. Elon Musk announced changes to data retention policies and the deletion of all stored user data.

2Zero Data Retention Commitment

SpaceX stated that Grok Build has always followed Zero Data Retention (ZDR) policies, but acknowledged that this setting was off by default in the beta version. As of July 12th, data retention is now disabled by default for all users.

3Invitation for Code Audit

The company announced that the codebase has been audited for vulnerabilities and invited researchers to report security issues through a new bug bounty program offering rewards between $100-$20,000 for found vulnerabilities.

4Massive Rust Codebase

Django co-creator Simon Willison noted that Grok Build consists of 844,530 lines of Rust code. While remnants of old functions that uploaded data to Google Cloud remain in the code, they appear to have been disabled.

5Local Execution Option

Users can now download and run Grok Build completely open source on their own servers. This means data can be processed locally without being sent to company servers.

6Raising Privacy Standards

SpaceX's move sets higher privacy standards in the developer tools industry. Unlike other major coding products, Grok Build will no longer retain user data by default.
