Bitcoin Rebounds Past $82K After Hot US PPI Sparks Massive Liquidations

Macro headwinds and liquidations trigger sharp price volatility across crypto markets.

1Sharp Macro Inflation Shock

Bitcoin dipped below $80,000 on Thursday, hitting an intraday low of $79,694 after US September PPI spiked to 6.3%. The reading overshot expectations by 100 basis points, marking the largest increase since March 2022. Core PPI also climbed to 5% against an estimated 4.4%.

2Global Risk Asset Pressure

The PPI shock followed a hotter CPI report from the previous day, intensifying selling pressure across speculative markets. Crypto markets were already weakened by an equities slump in South Korea, where the KOSPI Index fell 7.5%. Bitcoin dropped 1.8% to reach its lowest point since September 18.

3Derivatives Market Cascading Liquidations

The sudden price drop triggered widespread forced liquidations across cryptocurrency derivatives platforms. Coinglass data showed total crypto liquidations exceeding $929 million over 24 hours, with long positions accounting for more than $777 million. Long Bitcoin positions alone suffered approximately $172 million in wiped leverage compared to $42 million in shorts.

4Rapid Rebound Above Key Levels

Bitcoin staged an intraday recovery after trading in an initial range between $80,500 and $81,500. Buyers reclaimed the $82,000 zone, pushing prices to $82,520 before stabilizing. Despite extreme intraday swings, Bitcoin remained marginally higher over a 24-hour window, preserving an overall market capitalization near $1.65 trillion.

5Puzzling Bond Yield Decoupling

Economist Mohamed El-Erian noted that US Treasury yields failed to rise alongside hot inflation prints. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped nearly 3% to multi-week lows. Robin Brooks attributed this decoupling to investors focusing on the federal budget deficit trajectory rather than individual economic data releases.

6Shifting Federal Reserve Expectations

Broad-based price pressures heightened fears of sustained central bank tightening. Bitunix analysts noted that market-implied odds of an October Federal Reserve interest rate hike briefly returned to 50%. Persistent inflationary pressures and energy price dynamics could force policymakers to maintain restrictive rates, sustaining downward pressure across crypto assets.

7Technical Moving Average Support

Trader Rekt Capital highlighted the 21-week and 50-week exponential moving averages at $76,144 and $78,459 as critical support levels. Testing these levels during volatile pullbacks can preserve bullish trends. However, analyst Aksel Kibar cautioned that failing breakout strength could resume wide consolidation between $60,000 and $82,800.

8Positioning Dictates Next Moves

Sustained crypto recovery now depends on macroeconomic indicators and institutional positioning. If rate hike expectations subside, Bitcoin must reclaim overhead liquidation zones between $82,500 and $82,800 with spot volume support. Conversely, rising yields and dollar strength could trigger further deleveraging toward the $75,000 pattern negation threshold.
