JetBrains Simplifies IDE Plugin Creation

New web-based plugin generator makes developers' lives easier.

1Challenges of Previous Approaches

JetBrains previously offered two plugin creation methods: an in-IDE generator and a GitHub template. This dual approach increased maintenance costs and confused developers. Each platform update required updating two separate templates, leading to wasted time and resources.

2New Solution: Web API-Based Generator

Inspired by frameworks like Spring Initializr and Quarkus, JetBrains developed a new web API-based plugin generator. This system delivers templates from a single source, ensuring consistency. Developers can now create plugins both from within the IDE and via web browser.

3Consistent and Up-to-Date Templates

The key advantage of the new system is centralized template management. All users now access the latest templates without waiting for Plugin DevKit updates. This eliminates the previous requirement for plugin updates to get new template versions.

4Unified Feature Set

The new generator combines the best features of both old approaches. IDE-specific capabilities like dependency selection now coexist with template features like GitHub integration. New additions include Remote Dev support and Qodana configuration for quality analysis.

5User Experience Improvements

Developers can now preview project files before generation. The web interface enables plugin creation without IDE installation. Generated projects include detailed READMEs with instructions for GitHub repository setup and other configuration details.

6Future Plans and Significance

JetBrains plans to expand the generator with features like UI integration tests and Qodana support for CI/CD servers. This innovation will significantly reduce plugin developers' workload and contribute to the growth of the JetBrains ecosystem.
