1Officer Released from Hospital

Constable Jeff Smith has officially been discharged from the hospital and is currently recovering at home. The Belleville Police Service confirmed his progress on Thursday, noting that the 13-year veteran is surrounded by family. His return to active duty remains secondary to his ongoing health recovery process at this time.

2The September 20 Incident

The shooting occurred on September 20 during a Yom Kippur service at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue. Constable Smith, along with his colleague Constable Michael McCurdy, faced an ambush by 29-year-old Sean Ward. Ward shouted antisemitic threats before opening fire, targeting the officers stationed outside the religious site during the service.

3Protecting the Congregation

Approximately 25 congregants were gathered inside the synagogue when the attack began. Both officers engaged the shooter immediately, preventing the incident from escalating into a mass-casualty event. While Smith sustained critical injuries to his head and body, none of the congregants inside the building were harmed during the violent exchange.

4Outcome for the Assailant

The shooter, Sean Ward, sustained injuries during the confrontation with the police officers. He was transported to the hospital following the incident but succumbed to his wounds one day later. Constable Michael McCurdy, who arrived at the scene within three minutes, remained uninjured throughout the duration of the active shooting event.

5Community Fundraising Efforts

The Canadian Jewish community launched significant fundraising campaigns to support the two officers involved. As of Friday morning, the campaign for Constable Smith had successfully raised $969,110. A separate initiative for Constable McCurdy reached $58,400, reflecting widespread public appreciation for the officers' bravery in protecting the local Jewish community from harm.

6Support from the Public

Organizer Derek Kreindler expressed the community's ongoing solidarity with Smith as he enters the next stage of his recovery. Thousands of Canadians have contributed to the financial campaigns, providing messages of encouragement to the officer and his family. The police service emphasized that every well-wish has been sincerely appreciated by them.

7Operational Recovery Focus

The Belleville Police Service has prioritized Smith's long-term health over any immediate operational requirements. While the department is encouraged by his current progress, they have not provided a timeline for his return to work. The focus remains entirely on his physical healing and the support provided by his loved ones.

8Significance of Police Intervention

This event highlights the critical role of law enforcement in preventing hate-motivated violence against religious institutions. By engaging the shooter immediately, the officers neutralized a direct threat to 25 civilians. The substantial community financial support underscores the perceived impact of their actions in averting a potential tragedy within the city.
