Circular Roof Opening Illuminates Casa Óculo by OHLAB in Palma

Contemporary interpretation of Mediterranean architecture blending light and nature.

1A Home Defined by Architectural Gesture

Designed by OHLAB, Casa Óculo is a single-family residence located in Palma's suburbs. The large flat roof extending east-west forms the project's primary architectural move. Responding to the south-facing slope, mountain views, and client needs, the design integrates light, materials, and climate as fundamental elements.

2Load-Bearing Wall System

Lime mortar-clad bearing walls aligned north-south define the house's layout. These walls organize circulation while screening neighboring properties to frame southern views. They also facilitate natural cross-ventilation, ensuring year-round thermal comfort through passive design strategies.

3The Light-Playing Oculus

The project's standout feature is a circular roof opening above the main terrace. This off-center truncated cone captures winter sunlight, directing it into living spaces. As sunlight moves throughout the day, the shifting beam creates dynamic spatial relationships, transforming perceptions of time and space.

4Seasonally Responsive Design

During summer, the high solar angle contains direct light within the terrace, preventing interior heat gain. Deep perimeter porches provide shaded transitional spaces usable year-round. These features exemplify the project's climate-responsive approach to Mediterranean living.

5Natural Material Palette

Stone flooring, timber joinery, brass details, and lime mortar walls emphasize durability and environmental performance. The breathable lime mortar enhances indoor comfort while developing a natural patina over time. Material aging is embraced as part of the building's evolving character.

6Architecture Integrated with Landscape

The Mediterranean garden forms an integral part of the design. Featuring native, low-maintenance drought-tolerant plants, the landscape extends the mountainous surroundings into the site. Seasonal changes and vegetation movement create a dynamic experience that evolves alongside the architecture.
