Microsoft WSUS Faces Update Issues

Windows Server Update Services experiencing synchronization problems.

1Severe Performance Issues in WSUS

Microsoft's Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is facing severe performance issues due to metadata buildup. Organizations are experiencing slow synchronization or timeout problems during updates. Microsoft clarified that the issue is not related to the recent Patch Tuesday update.

2Affected Systems

The problem affects nearly all supported desktop and server operating systems, from Windows 11 26H1 to Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2012. Microsoft has released a fix for newly installed or rebuilt WSUS servers but has yet to provide a solution for existing affected servers.

3Risk to Organizations' Patch Cycles

Failed synchronizations could delay organizations' ability to test and deploy patches, leaving systems vulnerable for longer. Microsoft stated that the issue is currently on their end, and administrators have little they can do at this stage.

4Microsoft's Recommendation

In October 2024, Microsoft recommended migrating from WSUS to cloud-based alternatives. However, many administrators have continued using the service, adopting an 'if it ain't broke' approach. WSUS is still marked as a supported and production-ready service.

5Next Steps

Microsoft is working on steps to safely remove affected metadata from environments and will provide further guidance when available. For now, administrators have no choice but to wait.

6Long-Term Implications

If the issue persists and begins to severely impact enterprise patch cycles, urgent action may be required. This situation could be interpreted as a sign of Microsoft's neglect toward the WSUS service.
