Modern Michigan Home Designed for a Porsche Enthusiast
A residence redefining architecture, tailored for a rare Porsche collection.
1A Home Designed for a Collector
Located in Birmingham, Michigan, this unique residence was designed for a collector passionate about rare Porsches and fine bourbon. The architects moved away from traditional suburban home design, fragmenting the structure into interconnected volumes.
2Courtyard-Centric Design
The home is organized symmetrically around a central courtyard. This design reduces the visual dominance of a single large structure while creating a dynamic interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces.
3Garages in the Foreground
Unlike traditional designs, the garages are integrated into the courtyard, bringing the car collection into direct dialogue with the living areas. This approach redefines the relationship between vehicles and residential spaces.
4Material Choices and Textures
The house is clad in insulated precast concrete panels, offering an industrial aesthetic. Exposed steel cladding provides a warm contrast, adding depth and texture to the design.
5Sustainable Solutions
The project prioritizes sustainability with a high-performance building envelope, triple-glazed windows, and a geothermal heating and cooling system.
6Staging the Collection
The home serves as a stage for the owner’s rare Porsches and whiskey collection. Motorized panels conceal the whiskey display, creating a dramatic reveal when desired.
