Hollowed Quartzite and Steel Form Concav Book Luminaire
A magnetic bookend design integrating hidden lighting elements into geometric stone modules.
1Geometric Material Fusion
The Concav collection by Imto Deschini Studio merges Brazilian quartzite with galvanized steel to explore new lighting geometries. Designers Ignacio Martínez Todeschini and Ignacio Noel utilize CNC milling to hollow out the stone, creating a precise cavity. This process transforms dense, natural material into a sophisticated housing for integrated linear light sources.
2Magnetic Activation Mechanism
The design features a unique magnetic switching system that controls the internal circuitry. By connecting the mobile C-shaped element to the fixed L-shaped steel base, the user completes the circuit to activate the light. Separating these two components immediately cuts the power, providing an intuitive, tactile method for managing the illumination.
3Hybrid Functional Utility
Functioning as both a structural bookend and an interactive luminaire, the piece adapts to various library configurations. The L-shaped steel base provides the necessary support for book volumes, while the mobile C-element allows for flexible adjustments. This dual-purpose approach maximizes utility in small spaces by combining storage with ambient lighting.
4Precision Craftsmanship Process
Each quartzite module undergoes rigorous CNC milling followed by detailed hand-finishing to achieve its curved form. This combination of industrial manufacturing and manual craftsmanship ensures the stone maintains its structural integrity while housing delicate electronic components. The resulting aesthetic highlights the contrast between the heavy, natural stone and the light.
5Design Studio Collaboration
Developed by the Imto Deschini Studio, the project represents a collaborative effort between Ignacio Martínez Todeschini and Ignacio Noel. Produced in Argentina, the collection reflects a focus on material exploration and geometric simplicity. Their design approach emphasizes the hidden integration of technology, ensuring the lighting elements remain discreet within the stone.
6Visual and Material Contrast
The backlit linear element creates a striking visual contrast against the inherent density of the Brazilian quartzite. By embedding the light source within the stone, the designers achieve a soft, diffused glow that emphasizes the material's texture. This interaction between light and mass defines the core identity of the Concav series.
7Interactive User Experience
The magnetic connection serves as the primary interface for the user, turning a standard bookend into an interactive gesture. Users can physically rearrange the components to suit their specific book volume requirements, directly influencing the light's state. This physical engagement bridges the gap between static furniture design and active lighting systems.
8Future of Functional Decor
The Concav Book project illustrates a trend toward integrating smart, hidden functionality into everyday home office accessories. By prioritizing material quality and mechanical simplicity, the designers create a product that transcends traditional decor. This approach suggests a shift toward modular, interactive objects that serve multiple roles within contemporary interior design environments.
