Gabled Timber Volumes Weave Sanctum Cabin Retreat into the Lithuanian Forest

Architecture merges with nature at Sanctum.

1Architecture in Harmony with Nature

Sanctum is a nature therapy retreat located in the forests of Lithuania. Designed by studio arches, the project explores the relationship between architecture, landscape, and well-being. Spaces are organized around existing natural features, preserving the forest's ecological character.

2Traditional Meets Modern

The project consists of gabled timber volumes that reinterpret the proportions of traditional Baltic rural architecture. Vertically elongated forms harmonize with the surrounding pine forest, maintaining a restrained presence in the landscape.

3Courtyards and Natural Materials

At the center of the complex, a semi-enclosed courtyard serves as both the organizational and social core of the retreat. Dining areas, communal spaces, and activity rooms are arranged around this open space.

4Meditation and Rest Areas

A meditation courtyard sheltered beneath a lightweight timber canopy creates changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. Another courtyard preserves an existing birch tree as its focal point.

5Sustainable Strategies

The project is built with materials selected for durability and environmental performance. Sustainable strategies include photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, and biological wastewater treatment systems.

6Living in Tune with Nature

Sanctum positions the forest as the primary organizing element of the project, establishing a close relationship between architecture and the natural environment. This supports well-being and daily interaction with the surroundings.
