Warsaw Launches New Festive Illumination Featuring Local Legends
The city installs interactive light displays honoring historical figures and folklore through 2029.
1New Festive Visual Identity
Warsaw has begun installing a new holiday illumination scheme that will decorate the capital for three consecutive seasons. Departing from the previous retro style of the 1950s and 60s, the new theme focuses on historical figures and local legends. These installations are scheduled to light up the Royal Route until 2029.
2Technological and Energy Efficiency
The project features nearly 2.9 million energy-efficient LED points across 900 decorative elements. To minimize environmental impact, the system uses advanced controllers that reduce power consumption and light pollution during low-traffic hours. This infrastructure ensures the city maintains a festive atmosphere while adhering to modern energy-saving standards for public urban spaces.
3Interactive Cultural Storytelling
The displays integrate folklore into the urban landscape, featuring characters like the Basilisk and the Golden Duck. Interactive light books and motion-sensitive installations allow visitors to engage directly with Warsaw’s history. These elements are designed to react to the presence of pedestrians, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for all city residents.
4Historical and Artistic Figures
Key locations such as the Old Town Market Square will highlight prominent Polish figures. Visitors will encounter light installations representing Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Fryderyk Chopin, Stanisław Moniuszko, and Bolesław Prus. These artistic tributes aim to blend traditional holiday aesthetics with the rich cultural heritage of the city, providing educational value alongside festive cheer.
5Expansion to New Locations
The illumination project is expanding to include the new Plac Centralny and the adjacent Świętokrzyski Park. These areas will feature high Christmas trees and specialized light structures. Additionally, the Staszic Palace will host a new mapping show, utilizing light, animation, and music to animate the building's facade for the public.
6Park Świętokrzyski Light Garden
A permanent light garden was recently launched in Świętokrzyski Park, serving as a precursor to the holiday display. Opened on October 15, the garden features botanical themes including flowers and insects. This space represents a broader effort to revitalize the green area located directly beneath the Palace of Culture and Science.
7Interactive Pathway Mechanics
A 50-meter section of the park's alleyway has been transformed into an interactive light space. Equipped with motion sensors, the installation projects images onto the pavement that respond to pedestrian movement. This allows both children and adults to actively trigger and modify light patterns, turning a simple walk into an engaging activity.
8Strategic Urban Development
The contract with Multidekor signifies a long-term commitment to Warsaw's seasonal aesthetics and public engagement. By combining historical narratives with interactive technology, the city aims to increase foot traffic in historical districts. This multi-year strategy ensures consistent visual quality while providing a modern, sustainable approach to large-scale urban holiday celebrations.
