1Full Operational Capacity Achieved

The 704 MW Revolution Wind offshore project is now fully commissioned and delivering electricity to the New England grid. Ørsted and Skyborn Renewables finalized the installation of 65 Siemens Gamesa SG 11.0-200 DD turbines by September 2026. This milestone marks the successful transition from construction to full-scale power generation for the region.

2Regional Energy Distribution Strategy

Under established offtake contracts, the wind farm supplies 400 MW to Rhode Island and 304 MW to Connecticut. This capacity is projected to power over 350,000 homes and businesses across both states. Electricity delivery to the grid officially commenced in March 2026, preceding the final commissioning phase completed this past October.

3Legal Challenges and Regulatory Hurdles

The project faces a new legal challenge from the Trump administration regarding its regulatory status. In October, the US Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior filed a motion requesting a federal court to review the construction and operations plan approval. This development introduces uncertainty despite the project reaching full operational status.

4Timeline of Installation Progress

The installation campaign for the 65 turbines began in September 2024 and concluded in September 2026. Following the final unit placement, the project underwent rigorous commissioning activities to ensure grid integration. According to Ørsted’s Q3 2026 report, these final technical assessments were successfully completed in October, allowing for full commercial operation.

5Expansion of Offshore Portfolio

Ørsted is simultaneously advancing its 924 MW Sunrise Wind project located offshore New York. The company has already finished installing all turbine foundations for this site. Current activities involve the installation of inter-array cables and the commissioning of the offshore converter station, which will eventually connect to the New York electricity grid.

6Sunrise Wind Development Schedule

The Sunrise Wind project, which is wholly owned by Ørsted, will utilize 84 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW turbines. The company expects to initiate turbine commissioning around the end of 2026. Full commissioning for this specific project remains on schedule for the second half of 2027, expanding the firm's total offshore renewable energy footprint.

7Technological Infrastructure and Scale

Both Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind rely on high-capacity Siemens Gamesa turbine technology to maximize energy capture. Revolution Wind utilizes 11 MW units, while Sunrise Wind is set to deploy 84 units of the same capacity. These large-scale installations represent a significant investment in the infrastructure required to meet regional clean energy mandates.

8Context of Offshore Market Growth

The commissioning of Revolution Wind highlights the ongoing expansion of offshore wind despite complex regulatory environments. As companies like Ørsted navigate legal motions and construction timelines, the focus remains on scaling capacity to meet state-level power requirements. Future performance will depend on maintaining operational stability while managing these evolving federal oversight demands.
