DeFi Tokens Surge 38% as US Policy Shift Unlocks Value Capture
US crypto policy changes are making it easier for DeFi protocols to share revenues with token holders.
138% Jump in DeFi Sector
DeFi tokens have gained approximately 38% since August 17. SoSoValue's DeFi index $DEFI.ssi rose from 0.3616 to 0.511. While this surge coincided with Bitcoin and Ethereum's recovery, analysts point to the potential of mature DeFi protocols sharing revenues with token holders as the key driver. The lack of direct connection between protocol revenues and tokens has been limiting DeFi valuations for years.
2Turning Point in US Policy
The SEC's proposed 'Regulation Crypto Assets' framework last week provides exemptions and conditional safe harbors for certain crypto asset offerings. According to the proposal, when a project completes or permanently stops its promised essential managerial efforts, its token may no longer be considered part of an investment contract. The Senate's CLARITY Draft offers even stronger protections for DeFi.
3Protocol Revenue Leaders
Uniswap led DeFi protocols with $7.18 million in revenue over the past 30 days, followed by PancakeSwap at $5.16 million, Jupiter at $4.69 million, Aave at $4.12 million, and Aerodrome at $4.11 million. Most of these protocols now have mechanisms linking revenues to their tokens. For example, Uniswap ties revenue to UNI burns, while Jupiter allocates 50% of protocol fees to JUP purchases.
4New Token Valuation Models
Hyperliquid uses part of trading fees to buy HYPE, while PancakeSwap dedicates a portion of fees to CAKE buybacks and burns. Ethena proposes an even more radical model: when USDe reaches its stated supply threshold, 95% of net revenue paid to the foundation across three core business lines would go toward ENA buybacks. These models signal a new era in token valuation.
5Regulatory Uncertainties Persist
While the SEC proposal is open for public comment, the CLARITY Draft requires 60 votes in the Senate. According to SoSoValue, markets are gaining confidence in the direction of US policy despite lacking legal certainty. DeFi protocols remain cautious about activating revenue-sharing mechanisms due to potential securities law concerns.
6DeFi's Historical Growth Constraint
The DeFi sector has faced a paradox for years: protocols could generate significant trading fees, lending income, and other revenues, but token holders could claim very little of this economic value directly. This situation contradicted DeFi's promise of being a fairer and more transparent alternative to traditional finance.
7DeFi vs Traditional Finance Comparison
While traditional companies distribute profits to shareholders as dividends, DeFi protocols long struggled to develop similar mechanisms. These new revenue-sharing models allow DeFi to maintain its decentralized nature while transferring more value to token holders. Establishing this balance is crucial for the system's sustainability.
8Critical Period for DeFi's Future
Regulatory developments in the US and protocol revenue-sharing models will shape DeFi's future. According to SoSoValue's analysis, the next phase depends on whether protocol revenues continue growing and whether token holders can claim larger shares. These two factors will be decisive for DeFi's mass adoption.
