YN Studio Expands London Home Around Light-Filled Staircase

Renovated with natural and recycled materials, the home gains a modern touch.

1Modernizing Historic Texture

YN Studio preserved the historic Victorian texture while expanding a terraced house in London. Using natural and recycled materials, they achieved a modern design. This approach aimed to create a harmonious balance between new and old.

2Light-Filled Staircase

The home's expansion project was shaped around a light-filled staircase. The double-height lobby was designed to be visible from the entrance. White walls and Douglas fir shelves enhanced the sense of space in the area.

3New Spaces

As part of the expansion, the main bedroom was relocated to the new attic space. Illuminated by a Douglas fir ceiling and deep skylights, this area offers a unique atmosphere. Additionally, new spaces such as a study and bathroom were added.

4Material Selection

The project used recycled plastic tiles that mimic natural slate. These materials provided a modern look on the exterior while creating a warm contrast with Douglas fir in the interior.

5Architectural Decisions

YN Studio chose to create a vertical void instead of maximizing floor space, resulting in spatial generosity. This decision defined the home's character, offering an open and airy plan rather than densely packed rooms.

6Future Projects

YN Studio is also working on an expansion project for the neighboring property. This project will continue the studio's approach of blending historic texture with modern materials. Another expansion is planned later this year.
