1Strategic Financing Agreement

The Asian Development Bank and the government of Japan have finalized a financing agreement with AM Green Ammonia. This partnership supports the construction of a massive green ammonia plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The project represents a significant shift toward sustainable industrial production by utilizing renewable energy instead of traditional fossil fuels.

2ACCEL Initiative Launch

This project marks the inaugural investment under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience initiative. Launched in May, ACCEL aims to help Asian nations manage volatile energy prices while building robust, sustainable systems. The framework focuses on both short-term corporate liquidity and long-term diversification of regional energy supply chains.

3Capital Structure Details

The investment package includes a 100 million dollar loan sourced from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2. This fund is financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and administered by the ADB. Such collaboration highlights the strategic alignment between Japanese development finance institutions and regional infrastructure goals to maximize development impact.

4Operational Scale and Impact

The Kakinada facility is designed to produce 1.1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. By converting a former natural gas-fuelled urea plant to renewable power, the project significantly lowers emissions. This scale is expected to reshape the global fertilizer industry, providing a cleaner ingredient essential for both agriculture and various industrial applications.

5Partnership and Construction

AM Green Ammonia is developing this portfolio alongside partners including Gentari, GIC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The Kakinada site reached its final investment decision of 12,500 crore rupees in 2024. Construction involves multiple technical players such as Casale, Air Liquide, and NTPC Renewables to ensure high-efficiency production standards are met.

6Offtake Agreements Secured

Commercial viability is supported by long-term offtake agreements with major international energy firms. In January, the company signed a deal with Germany-based Uniper Global Commodities for 500,000 tonnes annually. Additional agreements have been established with European entities Yara and RWE, ensuring a steady export market for the plant’s sustainable output.

7Regional Economic Resilience

Japan’s finance minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized that strengthening energy supply chain resilience is critical for Asia. By diversifying energy sources through these targeted investments, Japan and the ADB aim to bolster economic stability across the region. This project serves as a practical model for turning energy security policies into tangible market jobs.

8Future Industry Implications

The transition to green ammonia production in India signals a broader shift in industrial manufacturing. As the first project under the ACCEL framework, it demonstrates how international cooperation can facilitate the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors. Future success will depend on scaling these renewable-powered processes to meet rising global demand for sustainable fertilizers.
