Trump's Latest AI Czar Resigns
Chris Fall steps down from AI standards leadership role.
1Chris Fall's Resignation
Chris Fall has resigned as director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI). Fall was appointed just three months ago. His predecessor, Collin Burns, also left the position shortly after taking office.
2CAISI's Role
CAISI is the primary organization responsible for developing technical standards and testing methods for AI models. It also assesses cybersecurity risks. However, it was not at the center of recent model risk controversies.
3Anthropic and Bans
In June, the U.S. Department of Commerce implemented an export control directive that forced Anthropic to pull its Mythos and Fable models from the market. This ban was lifted by the end of the month.
4New AI Safety Program
The White House signed an executive order for a new AI safety oversight program called 'Gold Eagle.' This program creates a clearinghouse for cybersecurity vulnerability coordination.
5Call for Independent Standards
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called for the creation of an independent, industry-run standards body modeled after FINRA. This aligns with CAISI's mission.
6China's AI Models
The new version of China's open model Kimi is competitive with leading AI models. This has sparked debates within the U.S. administration about banning Chinese models.
