South Korea Busts $9M XRP Scam That Trapped 71 Investors in Just 7 Days
Fake staking platform evaporated 3.4 million XRP with promises of 1.8% monthly returns.
1Scale of the Fraud
South Korean police dismantled a XRP scam ring worth 12.3 billion won ($9 million). The group managed to collect 3.4 million XRP from 71 investors in just 7 days during October 2025. The fake platform used names of legitimate projects like Flare Network and FXRP to appear credible. Investors were promised fixed monthly returns between 1.5% and 1.8%.
2Operation Modus Operandi
The scammers relied on online marketing rather than direct solicitation. They attracted investors through blog posts, YouTube videos and social media with 'principal guaranteed' slogans. Victims were persuaded to transfer their XRP from domestic exchanges to specific overseas wallets. After transfers were completed, the website was shut down and access to funds was blocked.
3Apprehension of Suspects
Police launched an investigation in October 2025 following increased reports of crypto fraud. 54 search and seizure warrants were executed. The ringleader was arrested upon returning to South Korea from abroad. Other suspects hiding in different parts of the country were also detained. An Interpol Red Notice was issued for a fourth suspect.
4Tracing the Funds
After identifying the operation, police froze assets worth 17.3 billion won on overseas exchanges. However, at least 10 billion won is estimated to have been transferred before emergency measures took effect. Blockchain tracking revealed wallets linked to the case handled transactions worth approximately 27.3 billion won, suggesting total damages may exceed the confirmed 12.3 billion won.
5Rise in Crypto Scams
South Korea has observed a noticeable increase in cryptocurrency fraud recently. Scammers exploit investor trust by mimicking legitimate blockchain projects. Unrealistic risk-free return promises create attractive traps, especially for new investors. In reality, reliable crypto investments offering predictable returns are exceptionally rare in this volatile market.
6Investor Warnings
Police warned investors against social media posts, blogs and YouTube broadcasts promising guaranteed profits. They advised verifying details on official project websites. Caution was emphasized regarding transferring crypto assets to overseas wallets. Comprehensive research was recommended before investing in unverified platforms.
7Legal Proceedings
Three suspects have been handed over to prosecutors so far, including two 29-year-old males. An Interpol Red Notice was issued for a fourth suspect. Police continue investigating others who may have helped create or promote the investment scheme. Evidence collection continues with assistance from blockchain analysis experts.
8Lessons for Crypto Market
This case demonstrates crypto investors need to revisit basic security measures. Skepticism is crucial, especially regarding staking and high-return promises. Regulators must implement stronger measures to protect investors. Combating such fraud is essential for the maturation of the cryptocurrency market.
