LG to launch humanoid robot with Nvidia in 2027
Nvidia-powered humanoid robot with AI and safety technologies set for 2027 release.
1LG's humanoid robot arriving in 2027
LG will unveil its bipedal humanoid robot in Q1 2027. The robot will run on Nvidia's Jetson Thor processor, Isaac GR00T foundation model and Halos safety system. The partnership agreement was signed on August 13 at Nvidia's Santa Clara headquarters. LG Corp Chairman Kwang Mo Koo and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang were both present at the signing ceremony.
2Nvidia's technological contributions
Nvidia provides the 'brain' of the robot. Jetson Thor handles onboard processing and motion control, while Isaac GR00T manages learning capabilities. Halos is described as Nvidia's first full-stack safety framework for robots. These three components form the foundation for the robot's safe interaction with humans in shared environments.
3LG's hardware contributions
LG supplies the physical structure and hardware components. Actuators and sensors come from LG Electronics and LG Innotek, with batteries provided by LG Energy Solution. This keeps most material costs within the LG group. The integrated supply chain advantage explains why an appliance manufacturer is entering this competitive field.
4CLOiD robot hitting production line in 2026
Before the humanoid, LG's wheeled industrial robot CLOiD will be deployed in the Tennessee washing machine plant by end of 2026. CLOiD will be part of a data operation running on LG CNS's PhysicalWorks platform. This system will generate both real and synthetic training datasets to improve robotic performance.
5AI factory coming in 2027
The next phase includes an AI factory reference site on Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform in H1 2027. This will be followed by an 80-megawatt facility in Cheonan, South Korea by H1 2028. Nvidia's DRIVE Hyperion platform will also be integrated into LG's vehicle development projects, expanding the collaboration scope.
6Nvidia's open world strategy
Nvidia isn't giving LG exclusive support; it's selling the same technology stack to all competitors. The company has already signed agreements with Japan's robotics giants for open world models. Nvidia's strategy focuses on expanding beyond China's Unitree, which currently outsells Tesla in humanoid robots.
7Fierce competition in South Korea
LG isn't alone even in its home market. Samsung established a CEO-led robotics division targeting the same market. Hyundai gained significant advantage by acquiring Boston Dynamics. This intense competition among South Korean conglomerates aims to strengthen the country's position in the global robotics market.
8Safety layer is critical
Nvidia CEO Huang positioned safety as the partnership's core focus. Safe human-robot coexistence remains an unsolved industry challenge. Huang emphasized physical AI's potential to give machines the ability to 'understand the real world, reason and act safely.' This vision forms the foundation of the LG-Nvidia collaboration in humanoid robotics.
