Anna & Eugeni Bach reimagines house in Fonolleres with wood and ochre ceramics

A renovation project blending local materials with contemporary architecture

1Where History Meets Modernity

Architecture duo Anna Eugeni Bach has renovated a house built in the early 2000s in Fonolleres, Spain, giving it a contemporary interpretation. The project preserves part of the existing structure while adding independent extensions that respect the village's character. Inspired by local stone and ceramics, the design reinterprets historical fabric through a modern lens.

2Continuity of Architectural Language

The project maintains Fonolleres' traditional architectural vocabulary while introducing new functional volumes. Elements like the porch, entrance, barbecue, and pergola reflect the additive character of traditional village houses. Each new component differentiates itself through unique geometry and material treatment.

3Material Harmony

Natural wood and ceramics combine with the main volume's plaster finish, with ceramics fired in a wood oven to match the village's characteristic tones. These material choices create a cohesive whole where new additions harmonize with surrounding historic structures.

4Adapted to Mediterranean Living

The design employs shade as a fundamental environmental and spatial element. Various outdoor structures provide changing degrees of protection throughout the day, extending living spaces beyond the interior. The large porch stretches interior functions into the garden while creating a sheltered area above the swimming pool.

5Functional Spaces

More private functions are placed within the extension of the main volume. The ground floor houses a study and library, while the main bedroom occupies the upper level. A double-height triangular void behind the bed connects these spaces, accommodating the owners' interests in music and reading.

6Contemporary Interpretation of Local Identity

This project by Anna Eugeni Bach reinterprets Fonolleres' architectural identity, which developed around a 12th-century fortification. By preserving local material palettes while adding autonomous volumes, it offers an exemplary contemporary design that contributes to the evolution of the village's traditional architecture.
