India Launches $1.53 Billion Viability Gap Funding for Grid-Scale Energy Storage
New government scheme targets 92 GWh of storage capacity to accelerate national renewable energy integration.
1Strategic Financial Support
The Indian cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a $1.53 billion viability gap funding scheme. This mechanism provides capital grants to bridge financial gaps for infrastructure projects that are economically beneficial but not yet commercially viable. The funding will be distributed between fiscal years 2026-27 and 2030-31.
2Ambitious Capacity Targets
The initiative aims to develop 92 GWh of new grid-scale energy storage capacity across India. This expansion represents a 170% increase over the nation's current storage infrastructure. By 2031-32, India projects a total requirement of 411 GWh, making this scheme a critical step toward meeting long-term national energy storage demands.
3Diverse Storage Technologies
The planned 92 GWh capacity includes 60 GWh from pumped hydro storage and 30 GWh from battery energy storage systems. Additionally, 2 GWh will be allocated to alternative energy storage technologies. These projects are expected to attract a combined total investment of INR 97,600 crore from both public and private sectors.
4Competitive Allocation Mechanism
Energy storage capacity under this scheme will be allocated through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. Public and private electricity distribution companies are eligible for support for battery and pumped hydro projects. Meanwhile, alternative storage technology projects will be open to development by both public and private sector entities for implementation.
5Boosting Domestic Manufacturing
The government intends to strengthen the domestic manufacturing ecosystem by reducing reliance on imported components. Battery energy storage systems will face a minimum domestic content requirement of 40%. This policy aims to complement existing supply-side incentives and create new opportunities for the Indian industry to expand its local production capabilities.
6Grid Resilience Objectives
The scheme seeks to build a more flexible electricity system by accelerating the deployment of grid-scale storage. This integration will help manage the variability of renewable power generation and reduce reliance on conventional power plants. Officials suggest that state power companies may soon require storage in all new renewable developments.
7Economic and Operational Impact
By providing financial support, the government aims to attract significant private investment into public-private partnership projects. This strategy addresses the economic barriers to entry for large-scale energy storage. The funding ensures that essential infrastructure is developed efficiently while maintaining competitive pricing through the established tariff-based bidding process for all participants.
8Future Energy Outlook
As India moves toward its 2031-32 energy goals, the success of this funding scheme remains a primary focus for the Ministry of Power. The integration of 92 GWh of storage is expected to stabilize the grid significantly. Future developments will likely depend on the effectiveness of these domestic manufacturing requirements.
