Uber Launches Driver-Centric Initiatives and WhatsApp Onboarding in India
New features aim to boost driver earnings and streamline onboarding through digital integration.
1Uber Pragati Event Announcements
At the third Uber Pragati event held in New Delhi on October 29, 2026, the company introduced several initiatives for over 20 lakh driver partners in India. These updates focus on increasing earning opportunities and simplifying daily operations for drivers, reflecting a strategic shift toward more flexible and accessible platform engagement models.
2Flexible Drive Pass System
Uber launched the Flexible Drive Pass to accommodate diverse work schedules ranging from part-time to full-time commitments. These subscription passes offer durations between six hours and 180 days, allowing drivers to tailor their platform access based on personal availability. This initiative aims to optimize driver participation by removing rigid scheduling constraints.
3WhatsApp-Based Quickstart Onboarding
The new Quickstart feature simplifies the driver registration process by utilizing WhatsApp as the primary interface. A bot guides prospective drivers through the entire sign-up journey, while a third-party service conducts mandatory background security checks. This digital-first approach reduces friction during onboarding, making it easier for new partners to join the platform.
4Financial Flexibility Features
The Earn First, Pay Later feature provides eligible drivers with an additional credit limit, allowing them to accept cash trips even when their account balance is depleted. This mechanism ensures that drivers can maintain consistent earnings without immediate liquidity constraints, directly addressing the operational challenges associated with cash-based ride-hailing transactions in India.
5Expanded Bike Service Utility
Uber is expanding Bike Intercity services to facilitate travel between neighboring cities, such as the Delhi-Meerut route. Additionally, the platform introduced Uber Direct for business delivery orders and Uber Parcel for personal package transport. These additions provide bike drivers with diversified revenue streams beyond traditional passenger transportation, increasing their overall earning potential.
6App Enhancements and Communication
The driver app has been redesigned to streamline communication and earnings management. Drivers can now utilize in-app voice notes to resolve confusion during pickups or drop-offs more efficiently. These interface improvements are designed to reduce operational downtime and help drivers navigate complex scenarios with greater ease while managing their daily financial performance.
7Enhanced Safety Infrastructure
New safety measures include the Record My Ride encrypted video feature to assist police in resolving disputes. Furthermore, real-time chat flagging prevents inappropriate rider messages, while a centralized Driver Safety Hub provides quick access to settings. These tools complement the existing 24x7 Ambulance Assistance partnership with Dial 4242, which has supported 25 cases.
8Strategic Impact on Supply
Aditya Kapoor, Director of Supply Operations for Uber India and South Asia, emphasized that these initiatives provide drivers with greater autonomy and industry-leading protections. By integrating technology like WhatsApp and flexible credit, Uber aims to stabilize its supply chain while improving the overall experience for its massive network of Indian partners.
