NASA selects four new missions for permanent Moon base

$600 million projects aim to establish sustained human presence on the lunar surface.

1Steps Toward Lunar Permanence

NASA has signed $600 million contracts with Astrobotic, Firefly Aerospace, and Intuitive Machines for four new Moon missions in late 2028. These missions represent critical steps in establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon. Conducted under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, the missions will deliver scientific payloads to the lunar surface.

2Advanced Lander Technology

The missions will use upgraded versions of landers previously employed in lunar missions, allowing NASA to accelerate exploration. Each lander will carry three standard NASA science payloads: SCALPSS dust analysis cameras, LRA laser reflectors, and LETS radiation monitors. This standardization enables consistent data collection from multiple landing sites.

3Strengthening Lunar Infrastructure

NASA currently has 17 planned lunar surface missions. The agency is offering new opportunities for U.S. industry to contribute to future Moon base infrastructure, including proposals like the PROMISE rover. Additionally, solicitations will be made for lunar communication and navigation networks. These steps are crucial for sustainable lunar operations.

4Lunar Dust and Radiation Studies

SCALPSS cameras will create 3D images of how lander exhaust disturbs lunar dust during descent. The LETS spectrometer will measure radiation levels that could pose risks to astronauts. This data is vital for safe landings of larger spacecraft and astronaut protection. NASA compares these measurements to 'weather stations on the Moon.'

5Advancing Navigation Technologies

Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) devices will serve as permanent location markers on the lunar surface. These cookie-sized passive instruments enable precise position determination by orbiting spacecraft. NASA plans to expand this network over time to establish precise lunar navigation infrastructure. Similar systems have been successfully tested in previous missions.

6Critical Step Toward Mars Missions

The Moon base project aims not only to establish a permanent lunar presence but also to test technologies critical for Mars missions. NASA officials emphasize that knowledge and skills gained from these missions will form the foundation for humanity's future in space. Lunar infrastructure will enhance safety for long-term space exploration.
