SpaceX cleared for Starship test flight after May failure

The next Starship launch could happen as early as this Thursday following FAA approval.

1FAA gives green light

SpaceX has obtained renewed flight approval from the FAA after identifying the cause of the booster failure during May's Starship test. The company has modified engine startup sequences to prevent similar issues. The upcoming flight, potentially this Thursday, will be the second attempt of Starship V3.

2Carrying Starlink v3

This test flight will debut the third-generation Starlink satellites, designed to increase network capacity. Among the 20 new satellites, six will be equipped with cameras to capture Starship's exterior during deployment - a first for the program.

3Partial success in May

During the first V3 test on May 22, Starship's upper stage successfully deployed 20 simulator satellites. However, the Super Heavy booster crashed into the Gulf of Mexico when its engines failed to relight properly. The FAA attributed this to erroneous engine alarm settings.

4Musk's 'rapid unscheduled disassembly'

As SpaceX's first Starship test since going public, this flight exemplifies the company's 'fly, fail, fix' philosophy. CEO Elon Musk famously refers to explosive failures as 'rapid unscheduled disassembly', considering them part of the reusable rocket development process.

5Critical for space ambitions

Starship V3 and Starlink v3 are crucial for SpaceX's ambitious plans including space-based data centers and interplanetary travel. Without fully reusable rocket systems, these visions remain unattainable. Currently, Starlink stands as the company's only profitable division.

6$86 billion test flight

Following its June 12 IPO that valued SpaceX at a record $86 billion, this test flight serves as a key indicator of investor confidence in the company's high-risk development approach. Success could mark the beginning of a new era in space industry capabilities.
