Hydrogen Storage and Turbine Advancements in Global Energy Markets

New research and industrial projects highlight progress in hydrogen storage and production efficiency.

1Storage Cost Optimization

Australian scientists found that hydrogen gas turbines can reduce the levelized cost of hydrogen storage to approximately $0.62 per kilogram. This model assumes a 30-year project lifespan with specific geological parameters like 10% porosity and 50 mD permeability. These findings suggest that integrating subsurface and surface systems is essential for commercial viability.

2Reservoir Dynamics Impact

Research published in Applied Energy highlights how reservoir characteristics dictate hydrogen recovery rates. While higher permeability improves injectivity, it often necessitates increased purification and compression efforts. Conversely, lower porosity requires higher injection pressures, which drives up equipment costs. Balancing these physical properties is critical for designing large-scale underground hydrogen storage systems effectively.

3Air Products Restructuring

Air Products reported pre-tax charges of roughly $3.2 billion during fiscal year 2026. These financial adjustments stem from project exits announced on June 30, 2026. Affected developments include a Louisiana clean energy complex and a green hydrogen production facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, reflecting a strategic shift in the company's portfolio.

4Everfuel's Danish Expansion

Everfuel secured a €245 million grant from the German government for its Project Frigg facility in Denmark. The funding provides production support of €0.98 per kilogram of renewable hydrogen. The project currently reserves capacity for 400 MW of electrolyzers, with long-term plans to scale up to 2 GW as market demand grows.

5German Capacity Auctions

Germany has awarded contracts for 5.1 GW of new hydrogen-ready combined-cycle gas turbines under the Electricity Supply Security and Capacity Act. RWE secured 2.1 GW of this capacity in the initial auction. The Federal Network Agency is now preparing a second auction, with the official announcement scheduled for November 10, 2026.

6Nippon Steel DRI Milestone

Nippon Steel successfully produced over 1,000 metric tons of direct reduced iron using 100% hydrogen as a reducing agent. The pilot facility in Japan completed 300 hours of continuous operation using lower-grade iron ore. This achievement demonstrates the feasibility of using hydrogen in steelmaking processes, even when utilizing lower-quality raw material inputs.

7AEM Electrolysis Collaboration

Asahi Kasei and Power to Hydrogen have signed a memorandum of understanding to commercialize anion exchange membrane water electrolysis systems. This partnership combines P2H2’s specialized electrolysis expertise with Asahi Kasei’s broad industrial capabilities. P2H2 previously validated its hybrid technology through a 1,250-hour pilot program conducted in collaboration with the energy company Repsol.

8Strategic Market Outlook

The convergence of geological storage research and large-scale industrial deployment signals a maturing hydrogen sector. While companies like Air Products navigate restructuring, others are scaling infrastructure through government-backed auctions and technological partnerships. Future success depends on balancing high-pressure storage requirements with the economic efficiency of hydrogen-ready power generation and industrial applications.
