SANAA design selected for National Museum of Ecuador
Curved brick design chosen after public backlash.
1New design following public backlash
SANAA's curved brick design for the National Museum of Ecuador was selected after public criticism of the previous design. The structure will be built along La Carolina Park and wrapped in terracotta brick.
2Inspiration behind the design
SANAA's design draws inspiration from pre-Columbian and post-Columbian cultures. The project uses circles to represent collective memory, gathering, and connection with the cosmos.
3Architectural features of the museum
The museum will comprise nine floors, including underground storage and parking. Circular openings in the main volume will create courtyards, surrounded by circular pools and planting beds.
4Design integrated with the park
The lower plaza level of the museum is designed as an extension of La Carolina Park. Galleries will be located on the upper floors, while the design aims to establish a dialogue with Pichincha Volcano.
5Competition process and public participation
The design was selected from finalists after a previous design was withdrawn. Chosen through jury assessment and public voting, the winning design was announced on July 19.
6Future of the museum
The groundbreaking for the National Museum of Ecuador is expected in 2027. The project aims to provide a permanent home for local art and culture, showcasing the country's history to the international community.
