Joe Flacco's Family Home: Where Function Meets Elegance

Inside the NFL star's minimalist 10,000 sq ft home designed for a family of seven.

1Minimalist Design for a Large Family

Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and his wife Dana built a 10,000 sq ft 'forever home' on 3.5 acres near Philadelphia. Design firm Bergman Vass and architects Asher Slaunwhite + Partners created functional spaces tailored for their five active children. Key focuses included the kitchen, pantry, homework room, and mudroom. A minimalist aesthetic was paired with durable material choices throughout the home to withstand heavy family use.

2Mudroom: The Heart of an Athletic Family

The home's main entrance opens directly into a mudroom equipped with laundry facilities, where kids can drop backpacks, sports gear, and dirty clothes. Custom lockers with metal mesh doors keep everything organized for each child. Designers note, 'This space became the most critical area for simplifying daily life.' Durable stone and wood surfaces were specifically chosen to endure the wear from four active boys.

3Strategic Material Selection

Facing the wear-and-tear from five school-aged children (including four boys), the design team implemented stain-resistant wool rugs, wipeable surfaces, performance fabrics, and vinyl wallpaper that mimics grasscloth. Luxurious textures like mohair and silk linen were reserved for easily replaceable throw pillows. 'We maintained light colors and wallpapers, just made smarter material choices,' explain Bergman Vass partners.

4Homework Room and Functional Pantry

The first stop off the main hallway is a homework room featuring individual desks and a central table. Opposite sits a 'working pantry' nearly as large as the main kitchen, complete with snack cubbies for study breaks. 'We created practical solutions for homework sessions with snack breaks,' designers add. Circulation flow was optimized around the family's daily routines.

5Togetherness-Focused Bedroom Layout

Despite 10,000 sq ft, the Flaccos requested their sons share bedrooms to maintain closeness. The boys' wing features two bedrooms connected by a Jack-and-Jill bathroom serving all four brothers. A hallway leads to a wellness room and ultimately the sports court. Their daughter's room was positioned directly across from the primary suite, which includes a spa-like bathroom and dedicated shoe vestibule for Dana.

6Sports Court and Privacy Balance

A key requirement was a sports court/gym accommodating Joe's workouts and children's playtime with friends. The primary suite offers privacy with two walk-in closets and a separate shoe area. Designers note, 'We maintained intimacy despite the square footage through smart zoning.' Materials were selected for both elegance and durability throughout high-traffic areas.

7Long-Term Material Philosophy

Every surface, furniture piece, and decor item was chosen with 10+ years of use in mind. Durable wood species, high-resistance stone, and performance fabrics ensure longevity. 'The infrastructure will adapt as the children grow,' designers explain. For example, the sports court accommodates both Joe's professional training and kids' play needs with flexible design elements.

8Big House, Smart Solutions

The Flacco home proves large square footage can still prioritize practical family living: dedicated backpack storage, snack stations, laundry management, and ample sports equipment space. 'We balanced luxury with functionality rather than sacrificing one for the other,' designers summarize. The result is a sophisticated yet livable space that keeps pace with a large family's dynamic rhythm.
