MicroLighter: CSS-Based Syntax Highlighting Solution
Modern CSS-powered syntax highlighter reducing JavaScript dependency.
1What is MicroLighter?
MicroLighter offers a modern alternative to traditional syntax highlighting solutions. Instead of JavaScript libraries, it uses CSS Custom Highlights to emphasize code blocks. This approach provides core features (language support, line numbers, theme support) while promising a lighter solution compared to popular libraries like Prism.js.
2Technical Approach
The system is built on the ::highlight() pseudo element. Developed by the CSS-Tricks team, this solution makes theme creation easier with light-dark() support and custom properties. Users can customize everything from background colors to syntax element colors.
3JavaScript Dependency
MicroLighter doesn't work completely without JavaScript but uses significantly less JS than traditional solutions. While relying on CSS for core functions, it uses minimal JavaScript for additional features (like copy buttons), providing performance advantages.
4Modular Structure
Users can select components à la carte. Features like specific language support, particular themes, or just line numbering can be added independently. This modular approach allows including only necessary parts in a project.
5WordPress Integration
The CSS-Tricks team has a custom WordPress block that's used Prism.js for years. They plan to integrate MicroLighter into this block. While acknowledging Prism.js as a robust solution, the search for a lighter alternative motivates this transition.
6Theme Customization
The system allows custom color definitions for 13 different syntax elements. All elements (background, foreground, comments, keywords, operators etc.) can be customized individually. light-dark() support automatically provides dark/light theme capability.
7Web Component Support
MicroLighter can also be used as a web component. This makes it easy to integrate into modern web applications. The component supports controls like language selection, copy buttons, and line numbers.
8Future Potential
MicroLighter offers frontend developers a lighter, more modern syntax highlighting solution. By leveraging CSS power and modular structure, it becomes preferable for performance-focused projects. The project could follow the success of similar web font-based solutions.
