EloElo Secures $80 Million Funding to Scale Indian Microdrama Market Globally
NBCUniversal and Hornbill Capital lead Series C round to fuel international expansion and AI development.
1Strategic Series C Funding
EloElo Group, an Indian microdrama producer, has secured $80 million in Series C funding led by NBCUniversal and Hornbill Capital. This investment brings the company's total fundraising to $130 million, valuing the startup at $500 million. The capital will support international expansion, specifically targeting the U.S. market for its verticalized content.
2Market Scale and Reach
Founded in 2020 by former Flipkart executive Saurabh Pandey, EloElo operates the Story TV platform. The app currently hosts over 5,000 titles across six languages and boasts more than 33 to 40 million monthly active users. Users spend an average of 95 minutes daily on the platform through multiple short-form sessions.
3The Microdrama Format Dynamics
Microdramas consist of 60 to 90-second episodes designed with specific hooks and cliffhangers to drive continuous engagement. This serialized, mobile-first format has gained significant traction globally, including in China, India, and the U.S. The industry is projected to exceed $3 to $4 billion in annual revenue by the year 2030.
4Monetization and User Behavior
Monetizing content in India remains a challenge as many users prefer free, ad-supported viewing. While over 40 million people have paid for microdramas at least once, only 15 to 17 million maintain monthly subscriptions. EloElo utilizes a tiered subscription model alongside ad-supported content to capture diverse audience segments across the country.
5Dolphin AI Production Engine
EloElo is scaling its internal Dolphin AI platform to assist in video creation, including image, audio, and video generation. While competitors like Kuku and Shortfree also utilize AI for workflows, EloElo plans to make its tool widely available for marketing campaigns, aiming to accelerate the content pipeline for creators and producers.
6Human-Centric Creative Direction
Despite the integration of AI, CEO Saurabh Pandey emphasizes that human involvement remains paramount for storytelling quality. He describes AI as a high-speed engine, while the creative director or showrunner acts as the essential Formula One driver. This philosophy ensures that human oversight steers the narrative direction of all platform content.
7Competitive Landscape and Strategy
EloElo competes against major platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, which host free content. To differentiate itself, the company focuses on premium originals and strategic partnerships, such as the collaboration with Balaji Telefilms. These efforts aim to entice users to choose Story TV over free alternatives through high-quality, serialized storytelling.
8Future Global Ambitions
The partnership with NBCUniversal provides EloElo with global capabilities to export its Indian-produced dramas to international markets. This move follows NBCUniversal’s own push into mobile-first storytelling, exemplified by their Peacock series, Campus Confidential: Miami. The company intends to use the new capital to deepen its content slate across multiple languages.
