Habitat Collaborative Builds Curved School in Tree-Filled Site in India
Local architecture studio designs a school in harmony with nature.
1Nature-Inspired Design
Habitat Collaborative designed the New Horizon school in Vadodara, India. The project was commissioned by the local chapter of Round Table India. The design was placed on a site filled with mature trees, and its boomerang-shaped plan harmonized with the surrounding greenery. Principal architect Bhavik Thakkar stated that the design aimed to convey a sense that the school belonged to the site.
2Central Atrium
At the heart of the school is a triple-height atrium. This atrium features a domed skylight that draws daylight inside and illuminates a small sandpit on the ground floor. The atrium was designed as a space reflecting the energy and aspirations of the students. It also serves as a thermal regulator, allowing hot air to rise and escape.
3Classrooms and Common Areas
The curved wings of the school house classrooms, a library, and a science lab. These wings embrace a small park at the entrance and connect to the central atrium via steps with wavy edges. Each floor overlooks the atrium, which is lined with yellow-painted metal balustrades and ensures natural light and ventilation.
4Natural Materials and Colors
The school's exterior is covered in pale yellow render, a color chosen through participatory workshops with students. Inside, patterned flooring made of kota stone, granite, and sandstone was used. Radial, triangular patterns surround the atrium's lightwell.
5Natural Light and Ventilation
The design prioritizes natural light and ventilation. Cut-outs at the edges of the concrete floors allow natural light and airflow into the interior spaces. Classroom ceilings are barrel-vaulted, supported by arched clerestory windows.
6Eco-Friendly Features
The school's design incorporates eco-friendly features. The atrium's role as a thermal regulator and natural ventilation systems enhance energy efficiency. Additionally, the surrounding trees provide shade, reducing the need for cooling.
7Student Involvement
The school's color palette and some design elements were determined through workshops with students. This participatory process ensured that students were involved in the school's design, creating an environment tailored to their needs.
8Education in Harmony with Nature
Designed by Habitat Collaborative, the New Horizon school offers an educational environment integrated with nature. The school's curved design and use of natural materials help students connect with nature. This design serves as an example for modern educational structures.
