Murcia's Sports Center Transformed with Solar Canopy and Vibrant Gateway
Architectural redesign combines renewable energy with bold aesthetics in Spain
1Dual-purpose architectural intervention
The EL POLI sports center renovation in Murcia combines energy production with architectural identity through two key elements: a lime-green ceramic gateway building and a dynamic blue photovoltaic canopy. Designed by meii estudio, these structures address both functional and aesthetic needs while respecting the local mining landscape. The project serves as a model for integrating renewable energy into public infrastructure without compromising design quality.
2Vibrant ceramic gateway
The entrance building features a striking lime-green ventilated facade made of ribbed ceramic tiles, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding mining landscape. This structure consolidates changing rooms, offices, and cafeteria under a unified horizontal design. A fully foldable metal facade blurs the boundary between town and sports complex, creating a versatile public threshold that welcomes visitors while maintaining functionality.
3Solar-optimized canopy design
LA PÉRGOLA is a photovoltaic canopy with a distinctive sawtooth profile formed by precisely calculated south-facing panels. The structure's folded geometry is determined by optimal solar orientation at La Unión's latitude. Built with a robust 3D steel frame and blue metal cladding, the canopy's appearance changes dynamically with daylight while providing shade for football stands below.
4Energy production meets architecture
The project transforms pure energy infrastructure into striking architectural elements. The photovoltaic canopy generates renewable energy while becoming a visual centerpiece. Meanwhile, the gateway building's ceramic facade demonstrates how sustainable materials can create bold identities. Together, they show how functional requirements can drive innovative design solutions in public projects.
5Material and structural choices
The canopy's three-dimensional steel structure ensures durability while allowing for the complex folded geometry required by solar optimization. Blue metal sheeting was chosen for its changing visual qualities under different light conditions. The gateway's ceramic tiles offer both aesthetic impact and practical benefits of a ventilated facade system in Murcia's climate.
6Contextual design approach
The design consciously contrasts with La Unión's mining landscape through its vivid colors and contemporary forms. Rather than blending in, the project establishes a new architectural identity while respecting the site's industrial heritage. This approach demonstrates how new interventions can create dialogue with existing contexts rather than mimic them.
7Multifunctional benefits
Beyond energy production, the renovation improves user comfort through shade provision and better facilities organization. The gateway building streamlines circulation while the canopy protects spectators. This dual focus on sustainability and user experience sets a precedent for future sports facility upgrades in similar climates.
8Model for sustainable public architecture
The EL POLI project demonstrates how renewable energy integration can enhance rather than compromise architectural quality. By making solar infrastructure a design feature rather than just a technical requirement, it creates a new standard for public buildings. The project's success lies in balancing bold aesthetics with practical sustainability in a cohesive urban intervention.
