1Successful Optical Link Demonstration

The 8U CubeSat ERMIS-3, developed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, successfully established a laser communication link with a ground station. This operation marks a significant milestone for small satellite technology, proving that miniaturized optical terminals can effectively transmit data from low Earth orbit to receivers located on the ground.

2Technical Complexity of Laser Links

Unlike traditional radio-frequency methods, optical communication utilizes narrow laser beams to achieve higher data rates. This requires extreme precision, as the satellite travels at several kilometers per second while the ground station must maintain a constant, stable lock. Atmospheric turbulence and cloud cover present additional challenges that can degrade signal quality.

3Collaboration and Hardware Integration

The mission utilized the ATLAS-1 optical terminal, developed by the Lithuanian company Astrolight. This hardware was integrated into the ERMIS-3 satellite to facilitate the connection with the Holomondas Optical Ground Station in Greece. The station itself was developed by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, showcasing a successful synergy between academic and industrial partners.

4ESA Support and Validation

The European Space Agency provided critical technical expertise, including environmental testing and optical alignment at the ESTEC facility in the Netherlands. This support ensured the satellite was prepared for the harsh conditions of space. ESA’s involvement was part of a broader effort to manage and supervise the Greek National Space Programme's mission objectives.

5Mission Context and Launch

Launched on March 30, 2026, alongside its counterparts ERMIS-1 and ERMIS-2, the ERMIS-3 satellite serves as an in-orbit demonstration platform. The mission aims to test advanced communication technologies for small satellites, which are increasingly generating large volumes of data that require high-resolution transfer capabilities for Earth observation and hyperspectral imaging applications.

6National Milestone for Greece

This event represents the first time Greece has established an optical link with a satellite in low Earth orbit. The achievement highlights the growing capabilities of the Greek space sector and its ability to contribute to the European space ecosystem through the implementation of the National Space Programme on behalf of the government.

7Strategic Importance of PAT

A primary objective of the mission was the successful execution of precise pointing, acquisition, and tracking, known as PAT. By mastering these maneuvers, the team demonstrated that small, 8U-sized CubeSats can perform complex communication tasks previously reserved for larger, more expensive spacecraft, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for high-speed satellite data transmission.

8Future Implications for Connectivity

The success of ERMIS-3 opens new pathways for secure, high-bandwidth communications within the European space industry. By proving the viability of miniaturized optical terminals, this mission provides a blueprint for future small satellite constellations. Researchers expect these advancements to facilitate more efficient data handling for global Earth observation and scientific monitoring missions.
