Industrial Design Meets Eco-Conscious Architecture in Victorian Home Renovation

Sawtooth House blends history with sustainability through innovative design.

1Design Inspired by Industrial Heritage

Designed by Francesco Pierazzi Architects, Sawtooth House features a contemporary rear addition to a Victorian home in Kingston upon Thames, drawing inspiration from the area's industrial history. The project stands out with its double sawtooth roof, referencing local manufacturing buildings like Middle Mill. Despite adding only 15 square meters, it reorganizes the home's spatial layout.

2Materiality and Light Play

New brick volumes reflect Kingston's industrial character through varied brick bonds and textured facades. The double sawtooth roof brings daylight deep into the interior while angled ceilings define distinct areas. A palette of soft pastel tones, oak joinery, and terrazzo surfaces introduces color and texture throughout the house.

3Environmental Retrofit Strategies

The existing Victorian house underwent a comprehensive retrofit to reduce operational energy demand and improve long-term performance. Upgrades include extensive insulation, an air source heat pump, and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. A 7,500-liter underground rainwater tank supplies garden irrigation.

4Carbon Footprint Balance

These measures reduce operational carbon emissions while allowing the embodied carbon from renovation to be offset through operational savings in under seven years. The project aims to extend existing housing lifespan while meeting contemporary environmental requirements.

5Redefining Spatial Relationships

Rather than simply increasing floor space, the extension redefines the relationship between house and garden through light, materiality, and spatial organization. Hidden from the street, it maintains neighborhood scale while creating light-filled interior spaces.

6Dialogue Between History and Modernity

Referencing Kingston's industrial heritage, the project establishes a dialogue between Victorian structure and contemporary addition. A restrained material palette and integrated retrofit strategy combine adaptive reuse with improved spatial and environmental performance.

7Client-Centric Design Approach

The renovation by Francesco Pierazzi Architects was developed in close alignment with the clients' environmental objectives. Sustainability priorities were integrated throughout every stage of the design process.

8Significance of Architectural Intervention

Sawtooth House demonstrates how targeted architectural interventions can extend existing housing lifespan while responding to contemporary environmental needs. The project stands as an important example at the intersection of architecture and sustainability.
