1NordVPN's new security move

Known for its VPN services, NordVPN has developed a free scam prevention app for Android users. Called HangUp, the application scans incoming calls and messages to warn users about potential threats. Utilizing Hiya's call protection technology, the app can detect numbers from telemarketers and scammers.

2How it works

HangUp checks incoming call numbers and alerts users if they might be scams, spam, or telemarketing attempts. The app uses call reputation data from Hiya's database. While users can't block individual numbers, they can completely block categories like telemarketers.

3Message scanning feature

The app doesn't just scan calls but also incoming SMS messages. Using NordVPN's Message Protection technology announced in June, HangUp can detect scams, fraud, malicious messages, and deceptive content. It analyzes message content, links, and sender information to assess risks.

4Privacy guarantee

NordVPN states that HangUp won't record calls, listen to them, or store message contents. However, the company emphasizes that the app is only an 'informational assistance tool' and may not block all unwanted calls. Users still need to remain cautious.

5Scale of scam calls

According to a NordVPN survey, 80% of Americans received at least one scam call last year. Hiya research found Americans receive an average of 10 unwanted calls weekly, with 30 million people falling victim to phone scams last year. The average loss per person was $682.

6Why it matters

Phone scams aren't just annoying—they cause billions in losses annually. NordVPN's initiative is a proactive step to protect users. However, experts stress that while technological solutions help, user awareness remains equally critical in combating this growing problem.
